Speaker 3, Dr. Wendy Mendes, presented an EMA study of emotion regulation and blood pressure comparing Black and white US adults. Results showed white adults used maladaptive strategies more frequently, but associations between blood pressure and maladaptive strategy use was higher in Black adults
This afternoon at #SPR2026, I attended an engaging symposium titled, “Turning Toward or Pulling Away: New Findings Using the Engagement-Disengagement Dimension as a Framework” that was chaired by Dr. Annmarie MacNamara @therealspr.bsky.social
I will be reviewing grad school applications for the clinical psych program at Stony Brook this year. Students interested in personalization, case conceptualization, ecological momentary assessment, LGBTQ+ mental health, LLMs, and related topics, should consider applying.

I hope we conveyed the importance of examining social context in psychopathology
Thank you @markschen.bsky.social, Yiqin Zhu, Yinghao Zhang, and @reneejthompson.bsky.social for sharing your amazing research and concluding remarks
SO excited to share that I'll be joining Stanford University as an Assistant Professor in Psychology starting September 2027!!
I’m launching the Emotions, Computation, and Choice Lab, where we investigate how emotions guide social cognition and behavior.

Our brand new Emotion and Psychopathology in Context Lab is heading to its first conference! Catch the EPiC Lab at SRP 2026 in Columbus, Oct 8-11. Posters Thursday and Saturday, symposium Sunday. Come say hi!
Excited to share that @epiclabharvard.bsky.social members and collaborators will be presenting at #SRP2026! Make sure to catch their posters and talks!
We also flag several limitations: e.g., context is still assessed too crudely, and the regulatory-components literature is diverse yet fragmented: components studied in isolation rather than together. For each, we offer concrete suggestions, then map what we consider some promising future directions
We propose an integrative framework uniting both: the processes generate the manifestation. Together, they clarify when shifts in behavior reflect genuine flexibility vs. volatility.
It resolves a decade-long confusion: variability is not flexibility. Variability reflects flexibility only when matched to context, the very distinction our framework seeks to make precise.
Competing theories of ER flexibility have long been treated as rivals. We argue they approach the construct from unique, complementary angles: one focused on how flexibility manifests (ER–context covariation), the other on the processes behind it.
It felt like a long shot but my submission to chair a symposium at the Society for Research in Psychopathology Meeting was accepted! ✨
I’m super excited to discuss how complementarity, or how people match in interactions, can help us understand the context in which personality pathology manifests ☺️
It was such a joy to present alongside these folks at APS! I am beyond impressed by the work my early career peers are producing. 🤩 See below for a very brief sneak peak of my talk!
So, if you're at #APSBCN (this the right hashtag?), come through on Friday for a great set of talks from ECRs on different ways of integrating social contexts within Psychopathology research.
Talks from @shayanasadi.bsky.social@markschen.bsky.social@awiglesworth.bsky.social and Teresa Vargas!

Excited to share that I’ll be starting my PhD in Clinical Psychology at @umassamherst.bsky.social, joining @katieleedg.bsky.social's lab! Grateful for the support from all my mentors. Also thrilled to announce that I was nominated for and have been awarded the Spaulding Smith Fellowship!
📢 New Publication Alert at JoPaCS! Many studies use variability as a proxy for flexibility across domains. Using emotion regulation as an example, we show that variability decoupled from context can be harmful volatility. Variability ≠ Flexibility. 🧵 doi.org/10.1037/abn0...
This has broader implications beyond ER for how we study flexibility in behavior, cognition, and physiology. Using variability as a stand-in for flexibility can be misleading if context isn't modeled simultaneously. Context is the 🔑
Huge thanks to Prof. Jutta Joormann and collaborators! I am grateful to the three reviewers who have offered very constructive feedback that has improved the manuscript!

Most research on emotion regulation (ER) flexibility doesn't directly measure context. It just assumes that variability in ER strategies reflects flexibility. But is that actually true?
Across daily diary and EMA designs, we used the Bray-Curtis dissimilarity index to directly assess ER–context covariation. Contrary to the assumption that variability is good, switching strategies predicted higher distress and psychopathology when the context was stable.
The CANDLab at Yale is hiring a new full-time research assistant! Excellent opportunity to gain post-bacc experience before applying to PhD programs in child and adolescent clinical psychology and neuroscience. 🧠 candlab.yale.edu/sites/default/files/downloads/YaleCANDLab_RA_2026.pdf
I will be sharing some exciting findings on how behavioral emotion regulation strategies are related to regulation motives and motive satisfaction at the symposium “To Strategies and Beyond!” on Friday morning. If you’re at SAS, I hope to see you there! (2/2)
New paper led by SJ Shao in @commspsychol.nature.com. Across 20 days of EMA (5x daily), momentary loneliness prospectively predicted heightened social threat perception and social withdrawal. Trait loneliness amplified loneliness–rejection coupling and social disengagement @emoriebeck.bsky.social
I am excited to welcome Aaron to join my lab as a PhD student! Keep an eye out for his cool work on computational models and emotion regulation dynamics!
So excited to share that I'll be attending @harvard.edu this fall as a PhD student in Clinical Science!
I’ll be working with @markschen.bsky.social to study emotion regulation dynamics and psychopathology across diverse contexts. Thrilled for the new adventure ahead! 🌟
Thrilled that this first empirical paper out of the lab is posted, led by Sandarsh Pandey, asking:
Depression (and other internalizing disorders) involve profound changes to sense of self. How can we study these differences using rigorous decision-making methods?

Applicants interested in using EMA, psychophysiology, and/or computational methods to study stress, emotion/emotion regulation processes, and psychopathology are especially encouraged to apply.
I will share some common Q&As later. Applicants are very welcome to email me with questions not addressed on the department website, but contacting me isn’t required and doesn't impact your application.
Potential grad applicants: I'm hoping to take 1-2 new students this cycle!
There's no need to email me in advance unless you have specific questions that aren't answered on the lab or psych department's website - everyone's applications will be considered equally.

Elon musk is the richest man in the world, he could be funding hospitals, medical research and universities. He could be solving the climate crisis. He could be feeding, hungry children. Instead, he’s trying to make sure that your grandmother doesn’t get an extra dollar of Social Security.
The news cycle right now - even just for science & higher ed - is overwhelming. We have to do it, but fortunately, we don’t have to do it alone.
My team is focused on tracking what’s happening to research funding, jobs & salaries, shared datasets, university responses & safety of our communities
