I’m old enough to remember Baghdad Bob

Yikes. In a desperate-sounding video, CENTCOM Commander Adm. Brad Cooper insists the Strait of Hormuz is “controlled by the United States… not Iran” and “open for business,” despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

Laith al-Khazali being named Iraq’s deputy prime minister immediately after the final US withdrawal feels like a grimly symbolic representation of who really won the war. In 2007, while advised and supplied by the Quds Force and Lebanese Hezbollah, Laith famously was captured by JSOC and proved…

3 things that will actually shift rape culture on campuses: 1. Real consequences for rapists and witnesses 2. Affordable housing solutions that include kitchens and dining spaces 3. Lowering the national drinking age to 18, breaking the campus monopolies on alcohol None of these will happen.

"But Achilles wanted glory!" No, he didn't. He very explicitly says, "fuck this, I hate Agamemnon, and I'm going home," until Patroclus dies. The entire point of the poem is his rage and grief. Can anyone read a fucking book, holy shit.

Hard to overstate how much Hegseth's execution stream mirrors the U.S. military's traditional description of ISIS propaganda: broadcast killings designed to send a message, strike fear and create a social media spectacle. Will almost certainly be repurposed by online terror cells

In response to this Electrek story, apparently, one of Tesla's "Senior Autopilot Engineers" (Yun-Ta Tsai) chimed in last weekend with some truly God-tier stupid takes defending Tesla's designs. I grabbed some screenshots. First of all, sensor fusion is a thing that significantly boosts redundancy.

"The ui looks spot on, but the first functional thing I tried was broken. I'm sure it'll get better in 24 hours. All software is dead" This is the characteristic failure mode of verifying llm generated code.

Holy shit. Someone has decompiled the Adobe suite, rebuilt it in Rust and released it as open source. Either all software is dead or the US copyright laws are about to receive an update. getartcraft.com/apps

I recently ported an image encoder from C to Swift with the help of coding agents, pretty successfully. This is .... not that.

This 💯

NEW: OpenAI plans to dump the solutions to "hundreds" of math problems on GitHub as soon as today, according to people familiar with the matter. Mathematicians are, to say the least, very unhappy. "There's a perception of mobster behavior." MATH WARS SCOOP from @wired.com's Isabella Ward:

I don't think free domains is a bad idea. It's a very good one! Domains are a loss-leader for upsells anyway. The cost of running a registrar are largely fixed. An identity you own, vs an identity you have to remember to renew or you lose, are categorically different things.

Anyone who's tried to create a website for someone else knows that domain purchase and management is both a roadblock and operational overhead. Removing it is a good thing, actually, if you want everyone to have a domain!

File this under: "Do you own > 0 domains? This is not trying to solve a problem for you". How many people own > 0 domains? Hmm...

They’re getting cleverer

To the extent that these type of jobs are viable in the current moment it is because they are heavily unionized. The wrong lesson to take from this is 'become a steel mill electrician' (not that it is a bad thing to be). The right lesson is to unionize.

"hope you can trust the lunkhead to contain the wizard" Matt's warning about worms is easy to miss if you attribute autonomy and consciousness to agents and forget that they're (a composition of) complex randomized functions.

All your exhortations to behave in an aligned manner are just spinning in there with all its other inputs. And if an attacker can put text in front of your agent....good luck I suppose.

I've been trying to come up with mental models or analogies for agents and my latest is a centrifuge cascade. Lots of expensive processes running in parallel and series that, within a harness, can produce a significantly better than average output.
