Hey folks. Here's one of the animations I did showing an O'Neill Colony - basically a hollowed out cylinder in space. This one is 35km long and 9km across and spins once per minute (if I remember) to provide 1g gravity. Please repost! Spread the love! Made in #blender. #sciart #scifi

Just finishing the final Dune novel by F. Herbert. His writing style leaves a lot to be desired. Nothing is explained straightforwardly. He just leaks information and expects you to piece it together. And so much waffle and internal dialogue. It's so tedious. I'm glad I'm almost done! Is it just me?

My tribute to Dune. The whole series revolves around the madness inflicted by knowing The many paths of time. I wanted to capture that sense of feeling both in control & being controlled by all of time and space. #dune #arakis #illustration

#Spacetober day 23: nebula. An Earth-type planet near the Horsehead Nebula. A cloud of gas is emitting red light, with a dark, absorbent cloud, in the shape of a Horsehead, superimposed in front of it. This is a digitally modified version of a painting I did in the 1990s. #SciArt #spaceart

If you're looking for art to accompany a press release, this is what I do. I have a PhD in astronomy and space illustration/animation is my specialty. This piece, on green white dwarfs, is one of my most recent commissions. Please don't use AI. Use an artist. Thank you. #sciart #scicomm #blender

#Spacetober day 19: Saturn In this artwork we find ourselves floating within the ring system of the gas giant, Saturn. The ring particles are made almost entirely of water ice - which is why they are so bright - and range in size from about a centimetre to a few metres across. #SciArt #blender

#Spacetober day 18: launch vehile/rocket An illustration of the Saturn 5 rocket just after take-off. The Saturn 5 launch vehicle was used during the Apollo missions that landed men safely on the Moon and returned them. Modelled and rendered in #Blender #SciArt

I'm very proud to announce that I will have a regular column in the British Interplanetary Society's ODYSSEY magazine! It's called Retrofitting the future, and two articles are already lined up for publication.

It's #Spacetober day 17: Moon. A view of the surface of the Moon during a lunar eclipse. The Sun has passed behind the Earth, illuminating its atmosphere in an eerie red and staining the lunar landscape with the light of a million sunsets. #SciArt #spaceart

#spacetober day 16: Jupiter Europa is the smallest of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter, and the second closet to the planet. Its surface is icy and relatively smooth. Impacting meteorites cause melting of the surface, allowing the water to smooth out before re-freezing. 1/2 #spaceart #sciart

There is some evidence of large-scale movements of the ice, possibly supported by a liquid mantle and driven by thermal processes within the moon. Ice geysers have been seen on this moon, as in this illustration — jets of water-rich material spewing 200 km into space.

It's #Spacetober day 6, rover/robotic explorer. Exploration of Europa In the future, a probe descents into an ice chasm on Jupiter's moon, Europa. Jupiter is seen in the sky, with another moon, Io, in transit. #SciArt #spaceart

It's #Spacetober day 8, supernova. The searing explosion of a Type Ia supernova marks the end of a white dwarf's life. Its companion star, from which it was accreting gas, is ejected in the event. It will forever speed through space like a cosmic pinball. #SciArt #spaceart

It's #Spacetober day 10: Earth Illustration of a hand cradling the Earth, perhaps depicting a divine event such as Creation, or else symbolising Earth's fragility, and our responsibility for its degradation. #SciArt #spaceart

Ask Ethan: Can a Kevlar tether create artificial gravity in space? The cheapest way to create artificial gravity in space is to rotate two massive, tethered capsules together. But how to control for both angular momentum and Coriolis forces? bigthink.com/starts-with-... #space #astro #physics

bigthink.comAsk Ethan: Can a Kevlar tether create artificial gravity in space?A huge obstacle for human bodies in space is that we fare poorly in zero/reduced gravity. Can two rotating, tethered capsules overcome that?

It's #Spacetober day 7, Venus. #SciArt #spaceart Artwork of the Venera 9 spacecraft on the surface of Venus. The Venera probes were a series of ten successful missions sent to Venus by the Soviet Union in the 1970s. Venera 9 was launched on 8 June 1975. 1/2

Sickening. I would be absolutely incensed if this were to happen to me.

If you encircled the Earth with a particle accelerator and used the strongest magnets available, then you'd unlock 100,000 TeV energies. But to access the Grand Unified Theory scale, you'd need a hundred million times more energy than that... bigthink.com/starts-with-...

Mark is very talented and if you need a scientific illustration there's a decent chance he has one that works. If it's an astronomy illustration, that chance is very high. 🧪

New followers, don't forget you can see all of my illustrations and animations (yes, all, more than 3000 works) at markgarlick.com. #sciart #scicomm

I'm an O'Neillian -- meaning I find Gerard O'Neill's vision of our future in space my favorite -- and @markgarlick.com's depictions of that are so beautiful!! --> bsky.app/profile/mark...

Thank you all for likes and comments. Much appreciated. But even more appreciated are RESKEETS. My income has been cut in half by AI and is only going to worse. Some of you have far more followers than I. You can make a difference by just hitting that share button. Please. And thank you.

@astrokatie.com I thought you might appreciate this external view of the hotel, Katie. The pods are the rooms, featured in the previous animation. Cheers. #blender #scifi #sciart

More fun with my orbital space hotel. Made in #blender. FUN only. Not a serious concept. The barrel-shaped pods are the living quarters. They're detachable in case of damage to the underlying ring. (Although, not sure how much help that will be!) #sciart #spaceart #scifi
