I think this is very interesting (from a longer list of non-expert observations about Brazil). And I feel like social media structures and norms work against this. Work against this by design?

- Disassociate the right/conservatives from the far-right/extremism: those who have been historically right-leaning might think far-right candidates will best serve their interests but during this stark rise in fascism, it’s crucial to differentiate political divergence from totalitarianism.

This is a good article—but it frames this as a red state thing and I think it’s wider than that. I heard a lot of similar language when my western mass town voted down a property tax increase this spring.

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

“Anti-tax activists contend that the levies turn homeowners into vassals who pay rent to the government for the use of their own house — one that could be seized after an unpaid bill.” Bunch of people were saying stuff like this, especially on Facebook.

Heard this a lot too. So divorced from idea of community I don’t know where to start with them “ A fairer system, he argued, would make people pay for the government services they use, but not those they don’t. “I’m not willing to give up my home for a book or a walk in the park,” Massie said.”

Another bullseye, but I feel like they could ask me the bubbler question and the Mary merger question and let me skip the other 58. I also demand the option to select both sub and grinder

Fellow Massholes, please read this thread. Every election expert is predicting this will bite us in the ass if we screw up. Please vote no on 3

Ugh: A new Massachusetts poll has a 51-32 lead for a ballot initiative to adopt the top-two “primary” system. This system has been a wreck in California. The majority party frequently risks getting shut out of general elections, so party organizations often pick favorites in primaries to avoid that

Does anyone know a writing or literary term for this effect? Hobbes is an anthropomorphized tiger, and a lot of times, his tigerness isn’t at issue. Other times, it’s explicitly referenced—like when he pounces on Calvin with slavering fangs. But here . . . 1/2

This post is unavailable.

. . . Hobbes’ line doesn’t explicitly reference his tigerness, but it’s better because he’s a tiger. Maybe it’s just good characterization, or a fancy animal joke. But it feels like there’s a more specific thing happening. Bojack Horseman does it a lot too. Any ideas?

This is a really great question, and I'm gonna go... pretty in depth to answer it so buckle up (if you wanna come along for the ride)! (1/n)

I wrote this essay Monday evening, in a state of agitation after watching Max Miller’s use his wife’s act of making him dinner as evidence that he couldn’t possibly have abused her. I published it this morning, and mere hours later it’s all gotten even more horrific. 1/ dot-connecting.ghost.io/on/

I really like every Felice Brothers song I hear, but they feel like a guilty pleasure for me. The lyrics are great but I can’t quite shake this vibe

Carl T. Bergstrom@carlbergstrom.com

In the lead track of From Dreams To Dust, Ian Felice has somehow channeled the dark imagination of Don DeLillo into a near-perfect pop song. And it's not even the best song on the album. That's "We Shall Live Again." song.link/t/179015374

Haley Stevens's accent has people talking. Is it really a Michigan accent? (spoiler: yes. It really is - tho see the note below) I had fun talking with the New York Times about one of my very specific niches of expertise (Michigan English). www.nytimes.com/2026/07/30/u...

Sure sure but am I supposed to root for Harry Kane, the bounder who tormented Elaine?

Lot of newer fans watching the World Cup but as a reminder Mexico is the USMNT biggest and most hated rival. Like rooting for the Knicks or Celtics here.

The rainier cherry harvest has begun in WA. Workers earn $10 per 25lb bucket. This short one month season is how workers save up for winter time as they have the opportunity to save money if they work extremely fast. Some can make $30-$40/hr but most workers don't. #WeFeedYou
