Okay, buckle up bsky, it's time for the Tale of the Bunny Paper. Here's the imported thread from twitter where the search all started: bsky.app/profile/bets... (1/n)

Bill Labov died this morning. I'm not coherent enough to talk about how important and influential and brilliant he was. I am very sad. I was so lucky to know him, and I am grateful every day that he (and Gillian, and Walt, etc) built an academic field where kindness is expected.

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

theatlantic.comThe Man Who Saved the Internet YesterdayOndřej Surý was a relatively anonymous volunteer working on PHP security. Then the internet exploded.

Holy smokes - I am having big FOMO about missing #NWAV54 this weekend, but at the same time it is so fun to get all these messages from internationally renowned scholars telling me about what great work our students are doing!!

On April 5, 1977, people with disabilities occupied government buildings across the country with simple demands: access to education, jobs, and public spaces. It has been fifty years since the Section 504 sit-ins, but the fight for those with disabilities continues.

I am entirely serious when I say that this should be seen as a moderate position. It specifically and surgically dismantles institutions that did not exist pre-9/11 and assigns their functions much as they were assigned pre-9/11.

Truthout@truthout.org

Rep. Delia C. Ramirez has introduced a bill that would abolish not just ICE, but the DHS altogether, repealing the 2002 law establishing the agency and replacing it with one focused on protecting civil and human rights.

BTW, I'm pretty excited about [the] Citation - this is the first issue of it. Premise: a biweekly (I think) newsletter where @drjpb.bsky.social (EdD., brilliant and clear writer - check out his books!) writes a short and layperson-friendly description of a few interesting articles.

What does a research project communicate before anyone reads the findings? @suzanneevanswagner.bsky.social, @jackrechsteiner.bsky.social, and I wrote abt how branding impacts sociolinguistic projects. [@The Citation] featured our paper in its Preview Edition! www.the-citation.us/sociolinguis...

I'm excited about the science communication of it all! I've registered (duh), and am looking forward to getting a nice biweekly brain-tickle of cool stuff that I might not otherwise have time to read.

shutting down frat houses won't end rape culture, but it will disorganize a lot of rapists, and i think that's probably worth doing if only to destabilize what is apparently an ecology of organizations that functionally exist to rape women per the whole "purpose of a system is what it does" insight.

Does my Speak-n-Spell feel pain when I type O-U-C-H? The jury is out. Philosophers and neuroscientists say that's fucking stupid, but I called a guy from the Center for Pretending that Household Electronics Are Sentient and he said there's no way to know for sure.

a lot of questions are being raised that should’ve been addressed by my “I am not complicit” shirt

Pop Base@popbase.tv

Ed Sheeran has released a statement on Macklemore being removed from his tour for speaking up for Palestine: “I am not complicit. […] Just because I choose not to speak publicly, it doesn't mean I don't have [my own opinions], and it doesn't mean I don't care.”

Glad folks are appalled by photos of the "phone booth" cage under an awning, but pls understand: This IG report is likely part of a cover-up. Amnesty Int'l interviewed detainees EIGHT MONTHS AGO who said the cage was half this size (couldn't stand up), had no awning, w feet chained to the bottom.

In Massachusetts, we have a responsibility to protect the vulnerable and stand up for those who need it. We don’t throw trans kids under the bus for political points. We protect them—and all of our neighbors—because trans rights are human rights.

RT with your home river Macatawa River, meaning "black water" in Ojibwe, and classified as a "stream in Michigan" lol. But you can kayak along it all the way to the Big Lake, and pass a cute little windmill along the way.

The fixation on college majors continues to be one of the great bait and switches of modern education. Core curriculum classes, distributed across the subjects and comprising the bulk of course credits taught in any given year continue to be *most* of college education.

In the past 2 days, Indy (1;11) switched from Verb-Subject word order (“coming daddy!”) to Subject-Verb (“daddy coming!”) I’m trying to pay attention to whether he’s doing variation between the two options still but so far since hearing S-V I haven’t heard V-S #linguistbabyphotos

Once a month my kids get a book from Dolly Parton. “Mama did Dolly Parton give me another book??” 🥺 A monthly Santa figure

Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library has gifted over 150 million books (yes, 150 million) around the world. This is what goodness looks like. She ALSO brought us Buffy. She ALSO funded the Covid vaccine. She ALSO wrote “Jolene”. The most remarkable person. donate.imaginationlibrary.com
