It's @desertbus.org Time!

mark burge@markburge.ca

I took it little easier on me for @desertbus.org as it’s been a *year.* This year I made some charcuterie boards for hope because everyone likes adult lunchables. #desertbus20 #craftalong #db2026

For a company that made its name on selling books online, this isn’t a good look. (Yes I know, America company bad)

I will never not be impressed with political reporters being able to talk about nothing for three hours as they wait for vote results.

It would take me nearly 2 hours by bus to get home tonight, right now. 25 minutes by car. And I’m literally standing and a rapid bus stop right now. #vancouver #translink

Hey mark, what kind of handles are you making for your new kitchen cabinet doors. Oh, just the most time consuming they could possibly be, nearly purposely made so they have to be hand sanded. #woodworking

Replying to @anthonyfloyd.ca

Various traffic calming measures have been installed under the enshrined authority of the City Engineer, who is not a politician. Recent measures have been installed under the Neighbourhood Traffic Managment Program after EXTENSIVE consultation with residents.

<long, slow breath in><long, slow breath out> Traffic diverters, installed in neighbourhoods around the city, are an essential tool at keeping people safe on our roads. They are one tool in a whole toolbox of traffic calming measures that engineers have access to.

This is a HUGE red flag for transportation in Vancouver. Ken Sim is vowing to repeal Gregor Robertson's 2017 delegation of authority to the chief engineer on road allocation. This would mean that every single bike lane and traffic calming scheme has to go to council for a public hearing and vote.

City of North Vancouver added Jersey barriers to approaches of new Crosscut Bridge, a $17-million pedestrian and cycling connector over Highway 1 -- BECAUSE A MOTORIST DROVE THEIR VEHICLE OVER IT. Bridge temporarily closed for engineering assessment. Pics: Geoff Fawkes, Facebook.

and 29 km of that is the Seawall- a route for at least 10km of that is primarily recreational. So really, Vancouver is down to 80ish km. Take away arbutus and central valley greenway and that's another 20km. Yeah, Vancouver isn't a bike friendly city.

You are not ready for this list. Unlikely cities that have more “high comfort” bike lanes (not including sharrows) than Vancouver: Vancouver 108km Montreal 251km Toronto 110km San Francisco 224km New York 893km Minneapolis 201km Madison, Wisconsin 188km Possibly Calgary, Winnipeg and Edmonton

I am begging for ICBC to actually make sure drivers know how right of way works, understand what sharrows actually mean, and in the latest case understand that waving me past you when your windows are tinted and I can’t see your mirrror isn’t going to help anyone. #cycling #bikecommuting #bikeyvr

And before you go “but cyclists do it too” Cyclists aren’t operating several ton pieces of machinery. We license forklift drivers more stringently than we do drivers of motor vehicles. #bikeyvr

River district hasn’t had a voting place since the first townhomes were built in 2012- the closest being a 30 minute walk one way. Olympic villages had one literally less than a year after the first residents moved in. #vancouver #vanpoli

Voter suppression is election stealing. That’s the post.

The fact that the article doesn’t even mention the rounds of local targeted consultation, or pull from the engagement summaries is just bad reporting, especially when they mention a specific number for a petition to get rid of it.

Rhi Faux@rhifaux.bsky.social

This is my neighbourhood & this reporting is lousy - as are the people leading these efforts. The traffic calming here was well-advertised, involved extensive consultation, and does not barricade anyone in their own neighbourhood. It has made the area much safer for people walking and rolling. 1/

Also, consultation started in 2023. It’s insane how long it takes to go from that to implementation.

mark burge@markburge.ca

Traffic calming was asked by so many in the neighbourhood that the city created an entire program so it could be replicated in other areas of the city. The fact is that traffic calming is massively popular, the problem is that Google Maps routes people down inappropriate routes.

Don't worry, we can just put all the bike routes on side streets. No wait, not like that.

related: its insane how few aftermarket head units have a dial for volume control/mute. #caraudio

mark burge@markburge.ca

I spent most of my free time working on switching out the headunit on my van. Now it's in english!

The R2 from Metrotown to park royal is up and running and it’s taken my estimated commute time by bus down by….. 10 minutes.

At the risk of betraying my cycling credentials, I got a van last week after months of importing it from Japan. It’s a 2008 Toyota regius ace.

There's an existing bed setup in the back, but fits a full sheet of plywood flat, unlike the vast majority of pickup trucks.

Bicycle helmets are not designed for impacts with vehicles. Also if you get hit by a driver, you’re likely going to die from ten other things because you you just got hit by two tons.

Ken McLeod@kenmcld.bsky.social

New Fact Sheet by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that most children killed while biking were wearing helmets Only 3 children killed while biking in 2024 were not wearing a helmet crashstats.nhtsa.dot.gov/Api/Public/V... Bike Safety is about much more than helmets

It still blows my mind that city staff thought putting a bike lane on SW marine drive first before connecting an entire corner of the city(that is historically underserved by amenities) to the network (which it still hasn't done) was a good idea. #vanpoli
