Oh hi bunch of new followers who found me somehow 😄 Quiet for the moment due to life, but hopefully soon you can expect some thoughts here on software, art, music, design, community, collaborative and hybrid intelligence, games and game development, open source, citizen science, etc!

I've been thinking a lot recently about how participatory science can be a key part of creating more just systems that can solve critical global challenges. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to pull together a set of incredibly thoughtful, experienced folks in our field who I greatly respect.

Our recent work has been featured on the cover of Science! Multiple things to be excited about here:

Science Magazine@science.org

On the citizen science platform Eterna, #AI methods matched expert human players at inventing sequences that fold into an RNA pseudoknot, a structure in which loops pair with distant parts of the same molecule. Learn more this week in Science: https://scim.ag/4wOqvuE

An important step toward practical RNA design for health, environment, and technology interventions, the advent of deep learning methods that can take up these tasks, and a model presented by @eternagame.org for breakthroughs from AI-human collaboration and co-development.

Been thinking about this a fair amount recently (especially as I’ve been doing a bunch of proposal writing and such) - how even mundane writing tells you something about the person who wrote it.

This post is unavailable.

I am going to make so much use of this

Wilco@wilco.npmx.social

In @npmx.dev you can now view a package's changelogs currently only package's that use Github to host their releases or changelog.md are supported but support for others are planned

It was a joy to chat with Ronen, get some insight into the direction Cosmik and co are going, and explore all the shared vision we have (which only seemed to increase as we went!). Also inspired some exciting concepts for the future of participatory research (including with @atproto.science!)

Ronen Tamari@ronentk.me

Great conversation today with @luxaritas.com ! So cool to learn more about games for participatory science, feels like we are barely scratching the surface of the potential in research gamification. I learned about the Eterna project where video gamers became core contributors and authors on papers

So sad this isn’t universal. Instead: * I have to choose to either get a bunch of content in my feed I don’t want to get the bits I really want to see from someone * Multiple channels on YouTube is a thing * Discovery of my own stuff is worse * Poor access to circles of trust and identity

Hugo@there-hugo.dev

Right, that's a good point. Should we bring back "Circles"? And call it AT+ 👀 (iykyk)

I may not want to follow/associate with someone across all lexicons. But that could apply just as much to segments within a lexicon! And I think portability of the social graph correctly places emphasis on people and relationships. Build the content controls at the right level!

B. Prendergast@renderg.host

Not to take away from @airglow.run 's **incredible** automations, but reading this, I wish builders would just let me use app.bsky.graph.follow . It's so counter-productive to have to rediscover my #Atmosphere 🌀 network time and time again. airglow.offprint.app/a/3mkddtrbsy...

I do love the classic formulation of “naming things, cache invalidation, and off by one errors”, but if you think about it they’re all communication problems 😛 For real though, this is such an important part of what we do!

Hazel Weakly@hazelweakly.me

The two hardest problems in Computer Science are 1. Human communication 2. Getting people in tech to believe that human communication is important

‘git history reword <commit>` 🎉 Thank you, one more minor inconvenience I encounter every so often that now need not be an inconvenience!

GitHub@github.com

Git 2.54 is here with features like config-based hooks, new ways to rewrite history, and much more. ✨ Check out the highlights from this release. 👇 https://github.blog/open-source/git/highlights-from-git-2-54/

Look I know I don't usually post about stuff like this, but... I am so looking forward to it, it should be SO much fun. And for a good cause! Sad my Sunday plans were cancelled but glad I'll be able to catch it ^.^

These look familiar… 🔍

…magnetized star? Huh!

Nature Portfolio@natureportfolio.nature.com

Observations of an extra bright stellar explosion, known as a superluminous supernova, indicate that the event may be powered by a highly magnetized star, according to a paper in Nature. go.nature.com/4s6OVOB 🔭 🧪

Just thinking about this again these past two days The exact same game can succeed or fail based on whether the people jumping in are getting the game they expected A lot of the wrong players -- players that won't like it -- jumping in to play is really gonna color perception of that game.

Max Nichols@maxnichols.bsky.social

My stance is: player expectation and framing are huuuge factors that affect how players experience a game. Marketing and community management are all about managing player expectations and framing Therefore, they are affecting the player experience, and thus are doing game design

IMO a tragedy of AI’s trajectory (amongst other complicated feelings I have) is that it theoretically has the potential to be powerful as a tool for play, but the reality is contrary

Kate@katef.bsky.social

men have somehow discouraged themselves from wasting time or outright having fun, that they're inadvertently creating dumb little ways to make that happen without acknowledging that they're doing it. martin here is *playing*. the hideous plagarism robot isn't the sweet thing; you are

My heart is so full tonight at this concert. Amazing music, and especially a joy to get to chat with the group. Haven’t smiled like this in ages, I so needed that. 🙂

we have 6 different clouds all collaborating: - Dynamic mask clouds based on "cloud cover" parameter - High up stylized cirrus clouds to create direction\interest - Far static horizon cumulonimbus, to create a "back plane" - 2x static midground clouds for parralax -"bounce plane" clouds

sometimes you record a little timelapse and stare lovingly at the clouds in your video game

Oh hey I was wondering about the viability of this. Want to look into implementing this under @vite.dev Vitepress (for the @frameshifter.org site and eventually my own once I finally get around to migrating off VuePress and implementing the blog stuff I’ve learned from building that)

A couple months late, but finally got to write about some exciting work that was finally published and the broader impacts. Link to the full blog post in thread!

Eterna@eternagame.org

Eterna players were able to design molecular calculators which could revolutionize global health, low-energy computing, and biosensing - lets talk about why this is exciting! (1/7)

My obsession for a decade: Parts of games are real, not fiction. Like, you are not really becoming a powerful knight when you gain a virtual level. That's fiction, fantasy. But you DO gain real skills. In manipulating buttons, game tactics etc. In multiplayer games, the friendships are real.

Daniel Cook@danctheduck.bsky.social

BTW, Spirit Crossing is coming to Steam. The goal is to create a major Cozy MMO with a huge population of folks making friends in a safe and welcoming space. I deeply believe we can make the world a better place. If this interests you, please wishlist! store.steampowered.com/app/2321960/...

I was amazed when I saw @rachael-kretsch.bsky.social present about this in an @rdaslab.bsky.social meeting. ROOL and GOLLD are stunning (dare I say beautiful) structures. She presented about this for @eternagame.org last year too! Recording available at eternagame.org/eternacon/2025 #RNASky 🧪

Man, what a fun way to spend Christmas, curled up doing a score study of John Powell’s score for HTTYD with a fresh copy of the book from Omni and the deluxe soundtrack on play. Really gives me a deeper appreciation for this fantastic score

Huh! This is neat

I wrote an article about dialogue choice as part of a narrative designer’s toolkit *aside* from branching, instead considering how choice can invite us to *perform* a character. My case study is South of Circle’s beautiful fuzzy meaning-making (using symbols instead of words). 💜 Give it a go!

Gamers with Glasses@gamerswithglasses.bsky.social

We're just over the moon to be sharing this with you: the one and only @hannahnicklin.bsky.social on South of the Circle and how developers use in-game choices to give players space in which to perform the story. www.gamerswithglasses.com/features/per...

This is huge. I’ve tried doing type performance analysis before, and it was pretty arcane. This is a big step forward and will be super helpful for improving DX. Also, it’s just straight up cool.
