I had the opportunity to guest lecture at the University of Maryland on the relationship between MMA and the political right. We start from social sorting and psychology influences and then get to fascism in 1930s Brazil to the modern UFC-MAGA alliance and more. open.substack.com/pub/lthomas/...

open.substack.comWatch My University Lecture on MMA and Right-Wing PoliticsJust how longstanding, robust and relevant is the connection between the political right and combat sports? I answer that and more in this presentation.

Watching TKO and Canelo humiliate themselves by forcing through on Saudi events while the country is literally being bombed tells you how utterly addicted and central to their business sportswashing dollars are.

MMA as a vector for the stupidest version of right-wing politics? Brother, that train is never late.

A new book chronicles how the Israel lobby in the U.S. came to be one of the most powerful while amassing treasure from smaller but richer donors. Its tactics have shifted and so has its focus, pushing into eroding civil liberties at home. My convo w/ the authors lthomas.substack.com/p/how-the-is...

lthomas.substack.comHow the Israel Lobby Is Undermining America’s Foreign Policy Abroad and Eroding Civil Liberties at HomeA new book exhaustively documents how one of the country’s most powerful lobbies came to dominate American politics.

There are myriad issues with combat sports and lifting rooms, but at their best, an embrace of what they have to offer can be transformative for confidence and self awareness.

If nothing else, we've learned top tennis players have much more power than UFC or WWE main eventers. Novak may be a jerk, but he's not stupid & he ain't flying into a warzone.

Per @wonf4w.bsky.social , upcoming UFC and WWE events are still ON for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and there will be no public acknowledgement of backup plans. No wrestlers have reportedly provided any pushback.

it is deeply annoying to enjoy MMA as a combat sport while 95% of the fandom and the participants are the worst chuds imaginable

The worst part of Bonta caving on the Paramount merger is that it's a big flashing signal to every other company that there is no antitrust enforcement in America and you can bully your way into getting whatever you want. It's a monumentally bad decision.

Left-wing media is divorced from anything combat sports related. This is likely due to there being little political and even cultural overlap between who occupies those worlds. This is extremely unfortunate because legislation or biz practices lefty media typically would cover go untouched.

Jack@jackflash.bsky.social

I think that's it plus, as @lukethomas.bsky.social has said repeatedly, that current fighters don't really seem to care or advocate for themselves. Which probably makes trying to talk or interview them for projects or articles hard or impossible. Plus, UFC probably wouldn't take kindly to it.

MMA had a brief moment where it could highlight unique human interest stories or serve as emergent, almost punk rock cultural phenomena. Now it’s a vector for right-wing politics and home to low IQ dipshits desperately seeking Darwin Awards.

I feel bad for this chimpanzee It’s going to be difficult to wash that MMA fighters blood out of his fur after he tears the man’s arms off and eats his face.

When I first started making the argument MMA was a vector for right-wing politics (esp. in Western Hemisphere), I got fierce blowback at the suggestion. Now it's conventional wisdom repeated in the Financial Times.

People ask me to stay in combat sports to push back against this, but how? There isn’t much of a constituency looking for what I espouse and as long as the most powerful stakeholders enable or promote retrograde ideas and values with no advertiser or broadcaster pushback, they just continue apace.

The original, terrifying IT. His performance gave my brother and I nightmares as kids. He could do terror, but truly, he could do anything. Incredible range for a natural-born performer. What a brilliant talent. He’ll be missed.

Tim Curry, the offbeat British actor who specialized in playing eccentrics like the seductive, cross-dressing scientist Dr. Frank-N-Furter in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and such fiendish villains as Pennywise the Clown from Stephen King’s It, has died. He was 80. bit.ly/4wOSlqy

Everyone’s ratioing this and yeah, you should wear your helmet (I always do!), but they’re right. Just as pressure to perform personal wellness is not meaningful public health intervention, the lesson is systems drive real health outcomes. Wearing helmets is the right call, but not true bike safety.

Streetsblog NYC@nyc.streetsblog.org

Mayor Mamdani's focus on a helmet paints deadly crashes as the failure of vulnerable road users to protect themselves, rather than as the failure of government to stop completely avoidable carnage. buff.ly/0HIM3RQ

Places with the best health outcomes + widespread bike use don’t bother with wearing helmets. The common retort is that’s not the situation in the U.S. and yeah, prioritizing the car in how we build infrastructure and organize society is going to produce systemic harms wearing helmets can’t fix.
