I’m hard at work on a system neutral setting guide, and I’ve been thinking about what the shape of a modern setting guide should be, as contrasted with the ones I grew up with. youtu.be/O1kF45_NjZc?... #ttrpg

Good Christ. This isn’t a parody, is it?
The first genuinely honest ad for generative AI I've ever seen, from Microsoft / CoPilot A mediocre white guy sees his non-white colleague getting praised for good work, he asks AI to *literally copy it*, and then he gets all the praise instead: www.ispot.tv/ad/SoDi/micr...

What does it mean to say something is well written? (video version). Arguing about various television media online turned out to be a better use of my time than I thought, as it gave rise to this piece!

Lands of Katernia is a three book #TTRPG project: A monster book with tons of monster lore, an adventure anthology with everything from medieval dragon hunts to Jason & the Argonauts style nautical expeditions, and a system-neutral setting guide to a whole continent. You can follow the news here:
Storm King's Thunder (WotC) and Empire of the Ghouls (Kobold Press) are both globe-hopping epic #TTRPG adventures, though one employs some slightly directed sandboxes and the other is more linear. Both rely on divine intervention to rein in the party at key points: youtu.be/0u5p995G7Do?...
Today, I look at two #TTRPG adventures, Storm King's Thunder (WotC) and Empire of the Ghouls (Kobold Press). Both are world-hopping epics which see characters traveling all over their respective lands. How are they alike and how do they differ? I examine the structure of both:
Today I'm finishing the chapter on Araland, the nation directly south of Norrøngard. Long way to go on Lands of Katernia, the system neutral #TTRPG setting guide. Would mean the world (pun very much intended) if you followed along. www.kickstarter.com/projects/lou...

The Wild Beyond the Witchlight, Baldur's Gate 3, and Fury of the Forsaken all use a 5 part structure of three open sandboxes, linked by multiple choice funnels, framed by an intro and a conclusion/final battle to provide story cohesion. It's a great scaffolding for #TTRPG adventure design:

Today is work on the bestiary. I would like it to be work on an adventure. I need it to be work on the setting guide. #TTRPG www.kickstarter.com/projects/lou...

Star Trek had a lot to do with saving me from the segregated, racist Fundamentalist environment I grew up in. In the 90s, working for Star Trek Monthly in LA saw me visiting the sets and offices regularly. Star Trek saved my soul and gave me a career in science fiction and fantasy.
Structure: Two World-Hopping Campaigns. Looking at the similarities and differences between Storm King's Thunder and Empire of the Ghouls. #TTRPG
Lands of Katernia is a 3-book expansion for the world of Thrones & Bones. It features a monster book, an adventure book, and a setting guide. Today on the Lazy Wolves newsletter, we go into a more detail and share the amazing cover art from William O'Brien for Book 2: Chronicles of Katernia. #TTRPG
I've spent the morning looking at roughs of flags for various countries in the upcoming setting guide and working on an art brief for a town for the adventure I'm working on. All of this is for Lands of Katernia, a #TTRPG trilogy coming to Kickstarter. Hope you'll follow along:
Both Wild Beyond the Witchlight and Baldur's Gate use a 5 part structure of 3 open sandboxes, linked by multiple choice funnels, framed by an intro and conclusion for story cohesion. Richard Pett and I use the same structure in Fury of the Forsaken. It's a great scaffolding for #TTRPG adventure s.
A conversation elsewhere yesterday had me thinking about structure in #TTRPG adventure design. I decided to look at a WotC hardcover, a video game, and one of my own publications to discuss a structure I particular enjoy:
In 2012, I began work on what became the Thrones & Bones setting, used 1st in 3 children's novels, and then in some 13 #TTRPG products (not for kids) that focused on the Scandinavian-inspred area of the world. Countries of Katernia (1 of 3 books) is a system-neutral setting guide to the whole place.
Chronicles of Katernia is a book-length #TTRPG anthology adventure, written by a host of talented designers, that is one of three books in the upcoming trilogy of Monsters, Adventures, and Settings. Click to follow the Kickstarter along before it launches. www.kickstarter.com/projects/lou...
Countries of Katernia, one of three books in the upcoming #ttrpg Kickstarter, will feature scores of different regions, each with their own unique cultures, supported by the adventure book and monster book. www.kickstarter.com/projects/lou...
Lands of Katernia is a three-book #TTRPG project: a monster book, an adventure book, and a setting book. I started the monster book three years ago. I started the setting book, really, sixteen years ago. I hope you'll follow the project as we move towards launch:
Coming to Kickstarter: Lands of Katernia for #d&d and #talesofthevaliant is a trilogy of books featuring a monster tome, an adventure anthology, and a setting guide. It's a continent's worth of adventures, thrilling adversaries, and political powder kegs. Sign up to be notified when it goes live.
The Pre-Launch page for the next Kickstarter is up. Lands of Katernia is an ambitious, 3-book project greatly expanding the world of Thrones & Bones. Check out the latest Lazy Wolves newsletter, which dives into detail about what to expect. lazy-wolves.ghost.io/introducing-... #dungeonsanddragons

Fantasy author Chris Willrich just played a mashup of my own adventure "The Aptrgangr's Challenge," intended for the Scandinavian-themed Norrøngard campaign setting and the fan-made Star Trek RPG, Where No Man Has Gone Before. The result works better than it has any right to.

The Tome Show sat down with @whatdoiknowjr.bsky.social and @slyflourish.com to look at @koboldpress.com's Tales of the Valiant.
