Here's an idea for editors, let's do a little roleplay. Writer: "I have a contrarian take!" Editor: "Is it fucking stupid?" Writer: "Well yes, but it bucks the consensus. No one else is saying it." Editor: "Is that because the consensus is correct?" Writer: "... yes but... " <hang up>

We won not only against Bolsonaro, but against the full force of the USian's Big Techs, Meta, CIA, Trump, the Brazilian right-wing elites, the billionaires' press and more.

Lula winning is great for the planet, great for Brazil, and great for people who aren't revanchist assholes everywhere in the world, but let's not forget that it's also going to make some of the worst people on Earth extremely sad and mad. We should enjoy that, as a little treat.

None of the people who forever bang on about polling always underestimating the right because shy tories or whatever will acknowledge this result.

Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

The alarm in Israel's business community over Netanyahu's comments is palpable. Suddenly centrist pundits are saying how important it is to end the war. Another proof that sanctions have to be on the table.

Yair Wallach@yairwallach.bsky.social

The threat of sanctions finally attracts the attention of Israeli media and voters. Thanks to Netanyahu, who promises Israelis a blockchain based economy to circumvent future sanctions. A massive own-goal just four days before polling day; he seems to be losing his game.

In interviews he gives to very-friendly-media Netanyahu appears irritable, unfocussed and tired. He frequently mis-speaks and keeps making mistakes he would never have done in 2022.

I'd like to remind Trump administration that after Iran war started, Ukraine deployed experts and technology to the Middle East to help Gulf states defend themselves against Iranian drones and protect US bases in the region, while Russia provided targeting information to Iran.

Is a Svan-language renaissance under way, or is it too little, too late? ⭕ The language of Georgia’s mountainous Svaneti region has long been in decline. But a new wave of artists and businesses is trying to revitalise it.

Another, and probably more likely scenario is attack after the elections, to prevent the forming of a different government

RE Israel's election next week, I suggest keeping expectations low. The main potential upside is Netanyahu's departure from the political scene. If indeed this happens, it would open space for meaningful change, but that change would depend heavily on external pressure.

The French set fire to everything on the streets of Paris once every 3 years to ensure the Sun Deity offers a bountiful harvest next Spring, a rich tradition stretching back millenia, and one that will continue regardless of the ethnic demographics of the French population.

🧵 A few things I learned during my protective presence in the West Bank today. 1. Many Palestinians have a very limited control over where they can go, there’s more than 800 checkpoints and blockades in the WB and most Palestinians cannot get past any of them. It means that most Palestinians have

A real writer wouldn't blame his editor. Instead he should shake his head, sigh and say "once again, my less attentive readers are missing the larger point I was making" without clarifying in any way.

Holy shit. What initially sounded like a traffic accident appears to have been a targeted attack, this is terrible. Hard to grasp Haines of all people being the victim of something like this and really hope she pulls through

I cannot get past these guys thinking that fucking FRANCE had to import the notion that you could go on the streets and break shit if you were mad at the government, or that France has not been accepting people not born there for centuries.

This framing assumes professors are all more leftist than our students. My median undergraduate comes to my classes with politics to the left of mine. If I were trying to “convert them” politically, which is absolutely not my goal, I would be turning them more moderate, not more radical.

Sir, I’m happy if I can get all my students to do the reading and come to class on time consistently.

They asked him if the school shootings were really true. They thought the stories were CCP propaganda. They told him that they understood if maybe it happened once, because who would think someone could do that. But it didn't make any sense that it kept happening.

I think I've told this story here before, but I'll keep telling it until it's no longer relevant. A friend was sent to China for a couple months for a work assignment. After about a month, his Chinese colleagues decided they trusted him enough to start asking questions about American life.
