Started the TTRPG GPS my DH Center Co-Directors and I are running yesterday, but the game play begins today and.... maybe I'm gonna start a thread about what we're playing and why?

"If we want our data to be meaningful to artificial intelligence crawls..." Okay but what if instead we made the library even more useful to human beings instead

I think it'll actually be good for me to be writing multiple grants at the Film Festival, if only bc it's forcing me to dictate a vomit draft on my phone which is getting me past the "this must be perfect the first time" hurdle. Do I look crazy pacing in the screening queue? Absolutely, but it works

I always forget my film festival gym is for the talls? Like I'm adjusting everything and there are fully some machines I can't use because the shortest setting is too tall for me. I got an inch taller since I started lifting from my posture improving but that's not enough here!!

See now we're fucking talking One of the only weapons we wield in this fight is our money and attendance, and if everyone involved with an event says "I'm not going unless you stop using AI" there's only two outcomes: *No AI or No Convention* Conventions are made by and for the community

Chekov wasn't in Space Seed. The crew had to reset the hospital set to make it look like another floor in Hard Boiled after the hallway shoot out and also they only had one try at it.

We all know the "Viggo broke his toe" story but what's another movie fact you're personally compelled to bring up every time without prompting? For me, it's the fact that Robin Tunney is wearing a wig in The Craft because of having just shaved her head to save her job filming Empire Records.

And by the same token, I don't want to read a review written by someone determined to hate the picture in advance. Again, honest, sincere engagement. That is what I expect if someone hopes to be taken seriously in a film discussion. Negative or positive, as long as it's honest.

One day, ONE DAY, I won't be writing a grant at the Denver Film Festival. This isn't that year. If sponsors could have different deadline timelines, that'd be swell.🫩📚

The Supreme Court was asked to apply a Blockbuster Video law to [gestures broadly] the Internet. And… I think they might go for it. I think there is a small chance Blockbuster might help us restore some measure of digital privacy. My latest in @thenation.com. You can now call me Kurt Loder.

Who's got a new chapter out? I've got a new chapter out! So grateful to my colleague Lesley in English for suggesting we write this together. 📚 #LISsky #Skybrarians #LibrarySky #ArchivesSky

Really honestly overjoyed to have the problem of outgrowing my dining table. My friend group has grown and reshaped such that I need more space to eat with people, and that's really lovely!

Hideously embarrassing to have to ask for help reaching stuff in the grocery store not once but twice. I'm wearing heels! I'm doing everything in my power to avoid this!

I swear I do more readers advisory in discord servers than I have ever done professionally. Like yeah I'm in academic libraries, but I'm getting a lot better at book knowing through fandom.

My kid has started a Letterboxd list called Killer Sweaters for films where the killer wears a great sweater and they've asked me to throw it out to Bluesky for more because "that's the kind of thing those weirdos like to do"

the fundamental thing wrong with this ai-driven "hyper personalization" pipe dream is that your preferences are constantly changing, primarily in response to experiencing things that are different from your current preferences and expectations, through this little-known process called Living.

union person@junlper.beer

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

A child behind me at this dance performance whispered an awe-driven "what the Heck??" at one of the pieces in the program and kid? same. The performing arts are magical.

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying

Heard a horrible thunk against my 3rd 📚 floor window, and found this guy assiduously avoiding eye contact. Buddy, I empathize with walking into walls. You're in good company.

I can't complain about profs just expecting course reserves to happen by magic anymore. I placed an order for the class I'm teaching this semester and flagged it for reserve, but I just got an email back asking me to fill out the library's form. I HAVE BECOME THE PROBLEM. SHAME ON MY HOUSE. 📚

There’s no A.I. “literacy”. There is only power, to either rebuild or eradicate commonly shared knowledge production. They haz it. Remains to be seen if we haz some too.

Today in why your librarian is stressed: academic journals increase in cost about 5% every single year while our funding continues to, at best, stagnate. And that's just the things we already purchase, much less the new acquisitions our patrons need or want.

Like... a library without books isn't a library. A library focused on a million things that have nothing to do with access to information eventually ceases to be a library. We can do other things, but if you have to constantly dismiss our CORE as not enough... idk man.

Boulder Faculty Assembly passed a resolution calling for no extension of the OpenAI contract. Vote was 39-8-1 after suspending the bylaws. Everyone at CU Student Government public comment has been fired up about their corresponding resolution, talking about trust and societal impact. So energizing.

Jed Brown@jedbrown.org

Shared governance would prevent these errors. "By a margin of 9-to-1, she says, those who stopped to cast their vote with a dry-erase marker said they did not. “The people who decide we’re going to give this much money to ChatGPT are not the people who interact with students every day,” she says."
