One time when I was like 8 an elderly neighbour gave me £5 and fondly told me not to spend it all in one shop and I immediately went and spent it all at once on sweets and she found out and got really upset that I had spent it all in one shop, in violation of her express wishes

Momo@heyheymomo.bsky.social

Hello id like to spend all at once please

I honestly think this might be a case of unimaginative humans starting to copy the AI writing style.

er, is it just me or does this Guardian piece read like it was written by AI www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

If only there was some way of generalising this system to all medical bills

IGN@ign.com

Kunal Nayyar has said he's spending some of millions he made playing Raj Koothrappali in The Big Bang Theory to anonymously pay random people's medical bills. bit.ly/3OptbP6

Every single American seems to be convinced that Fahrenheit is self-evidently more intuitive. It isn't! It's just what you're used to!

William B. Fuckley@opinionhaver.bsky.social

Celsius is the scientist temperature measurement in that it’s the most conceptually coherent , Fahrenheit is the engineer temperature measurement in that it’s actually optimized to be useful for it’s main use case of communicating everyday temperatures.

My "safe to use" handheld console is raising a lot of questions already answered by the console

VGC@videogameschronicle.com

As rumours of a PlayStation handheld continue, a hardware modder has created their own handheld PlayStation 4, which they say can run for up to three hours and is “stable, fully functional, and safe to use”. www.videogameschronicle.com/news/a-modde...

I love when you're looking at a hotel online and it's like "Double Room with Mountain View" and all the pictures defly avoid actually showing the view. Well I'm sure that's nothing to worry about, I'll take one non-refundable booking please!

America still not beating the "every map is just a population density map" allegations

Robert (Bob) Kubinec@rmkubinec.bsky.social

Wow, @gelliottmorris.com made a detailed map of Trump approval *at the sub-county level.* Of course, there are assumptions that have to be made, but it's quite rigorous. Certainly the best info in the public domain. 👀 southern Texas 👀 Check it out: www.gelliottmorris.com/p/a-very-det...

People love to rag on the Mercator projection, but when did you last see a Mercator projection world map? They basically haven't existed for decades! Unfairly scapegoated projection imo

Who doesn't have an oven with a fan setting? Is this some new dreaded American thing?

The New York Times@nytimes.com

Love crispy, air-fried foods but don’t want to sacrifice the counter space for another appliance? Any oven with a convection setting can already do the job. Here's how to find out if your oven has this function: nyti.ms/4jpGPwK

Such a horror to use a slightly aging device with a micro USB port. All that fiddling about, feeling like something is about to snap off at any moment. How did we live like this?

The supporters and the media can speculate and plot Ireland’s path in public, but if Andy Farrell is thinking ahead about who stands in the way of his side and World Cup glory, he will be doing so privately #RTESport

Spotify Wrapped has been a malign influence on the world in so many ways but the worst is definitely establishing the practice of doing "end of year" lists in early December.

No surprise that the person arguing the "who needs revenue anyway?" side of this debate is an academic whose job doesn't depend on the commercial success of the industry.

Will the games industry start growing again? Or are we now in a post-growth phase? If so, what will that mean? Two industry leaders tackle both sides of the debate, and look at what the future might hold. www.gamesindustry.biz/the-big-ques...

To me this mostly signals Unity and Epic bothh further deprioritising their game engines to the point that they barely see each other as competitors anymore.

Unity3D@unity.com

Unity 🤝 Epic Games Developers around the world will be able to bring their games to Fortnite while Unity’s cross-platform commerce platform is coming to @unrealengine.bsky.social soon. When ecosystems are open, everyone wins!

For each of them the engine is now largely a trojan horse for something else: for Unity, its ad and monetisation business; for Epic, building its UGC (sorry, "metaverse") ecosystem.

I don't think that's great news for developers. We've already seen Unity take its eye off the ball because of this and the same could easily happen with Epic. Catering increasingly to an audience of UGC creators doesn't mesh that well with Unreal's core market of AAA studios.

It might turn out to be a cool device but for the avoidance of doubt it is not going to be a pillar of anything and no serious analyst thinks otherwise

SqueakyQueen 🏳️‍⚧️ΘΔ&!@squeakyqueen.bsky.social

i hear a lot of news outlets saying the Steam Gamecube is gonna be a new pillar of console, and i guess you could say that?? its not really a Console, to me it’s more of a Starter PC. its for someone who wants to ditch their Console for all the positives of PC gaming but the interface of a console
