Remember recently, when Trump was elected the first time, a lot of politically illiterate people frequently said “just think of how good this will be for comedy” and now, comedians are being censored by the government for criticizing the president.

Even now I have several friends who think my fears of authoritarianism are radical. It’s only my most politically disconnected friends who say that now though. I know they are naïve, I will keep fighting for the rights of immigrants, people of color, women, trans people, the LGBT+ community at large

And still, quietly, in the back of my mind. I hope I am just a radical leftist. I hope all of the work I do to “fight authoritarianism” is a waste of time. I hope they’re right. But I know, painfully, they haven’t been yet.

After trump was sworn in, I sat with a friend from highschool. That was when I was first told in person “Okay, but think about how good his presidency will be for comedy!” but it never was. Not then, and especially not now.

When Trump won I attended a brunch with the discussion group the morning after. We’d planned to be celebrating, instead we grieved. That same man from before reiterated, how trump would never do all the things we feared and if he tried he couldn’t possibly succeed.

I remember discussing the pressure people were putting on Congress not to certify the election. Trump’s rhetoric was too dangerous, he was too unhinged, Congress commit let him be president.” The man I was talking to said “I worry doing that will put us into constitutional crisis”

When Trump became the nominee I remember being part of a discussion group and one of the more right wing asked “what are you all so afraid of if Trump wins?” We explained our fear of authoritarianism, and the loss of our democracy. For the lives and dignity of immigrants.

We expressed fear for women’s rights and economic stability. He replied “you really think that could happen here? I think that’s a bit much. It would never get that bad” “I hope you’re right” became a a phrase I would use a lot when talking with people about politics.

In the height of the 2008 recession I wanted to find that woman and shake her and scream “THIS YOU IDIOT! The economy is in ruins!” Now in 2025 I see the growing thread of white supremacy even then. I again want to find that woman and shake her shoulders and scream in her face.

During trump’s first run I was a work and a TV there was turned to the news. I watched Trump descend that golden escalator and a pit dropped in my stomach. I knew the danger of his violent rhetoric. A man I worked with saw my face and said “Don’t worry, he won’t last a month”

I was a very small child when GW Bush was elected the first time, I remember being confused that they didn’t count or recount all the votes. As an adult 25 years later I wonder what might have happened if Gore had fought harder for a full recount.

When Bush got a second term I was in highschool. I distinctly remember walking into my theater class. A handful of students were celebrating on stage while the rest sat scattered around devastated. One of the girls on the stage said to me “Oh relax, what’s the worst that could happen in 4 years?”

the level of corruption unfolding right now will stagger future generations. it will stagger people a month from now.

A little-known office in the FAA safeguards the public during commercial rocket launches. Elon Musk says it works too slow. Now he’s in a position to change that. New: www.propublica.org/article/elon...

It’s fun that these universally hated institutions are trying to improve their public image by threatening doctors instead of changing their polices. That’s a sign of a healthy society.

A particularly shitty thing about medical debt is that you don’t even know that you take it on. You think your insurance company should cover something, you might even spend a lot of time and effort to make sure you should be covered. And then it just isn’t, and you’re screwed.

Medical debt was set to be eliminate from credit reports in March, but that now appears to be on hold indefinitely because Trump has paused all new regulations and because the Treasury secretary has paused work at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025...

This is absolutely criminal.

The 19 richest Americans, led by Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos, have almost as much wealth as the poorer half of the country. The bottom 50% of household own just 2.4% of U.S. wealth. While the richest 19 individuals alone have 2.1%.

Oh dope! Hey, question, how does this not come with proportional littering fines?

I don’t know that there is any way we shut down this fascist grab at our democracy with out full scale revolution. HOWEVER it seems like maybe we should give other, less violent options a try.

Here are the options on the table (which are not mutually exclusive): 1. House Dems bring articles of impeachment* 2. Senate Dems play constitutional hardball and obstruct everything 3. State AGs litigate (and prosecute) everything they can 4. Citizens march en mass

After stealing copyrighted works for #LLM #AI training from journalists, writers and everybody else who produces text for years in what amounts to probably the biggest thefts of such works in history, #OpenAI now complains that #DeepSeek might have used its “intellectual property”.

Stealing data, increasing consumer frustration, obvious attempts to drive down labor costs aside … this is just another example of being forced to need a smart phone. You are in a physical store, why should it require a person to have and use a smart phone?!

Instead of staffing stores, paying workers, and not locking up products, CVS has decided their simple solution is to make you: 1. Download the CVS app 2. Sign up for their loyalty program 3. Connect to the store wifi 4. Enable Bluetooth 5. Unlock the cabinet

The very few days I’ve managed to get lined up this month have been canceled because of the fires. My day today was canceled because of the possibility of rain. If tomorrow gets canceled I might actually snap.

Season 1, episode 3: We are starting off strong with a city and high rise office buildings. Trouble is we are seeing the underwear man. A man they claim was from Grand Forks, ND … I don’t think there are high rise office buildings in Grand Forks let alone multiple.

Okay, so, I do stand corrected (sort of). The underwear guy was taken in St. Paul which does have a few high rise offices. However, wasn’t the hit man taking him to Duluth originally? How did he end up in Bemidji? That route makes no sense. At least Grand Forks made some geographical sense.
