Working to change local politics in Cambridge, MA: https://letschangecambridge.us

NEW collab w/ @theshoestring.bsky.social:
Records I obtained from a lawsuit offer a rare window into the secretive world of sheriffs’ offices, where misconduct is often shielded from outside scrutiny by #Massachusetts’ weak public records law.
In just 4 hours, voting starts in Israel's election. Israelis face a stark choice:
On the one hand, a coalition of parties that will choose as Prime Minister a war criminal responsible for genocide.
On the other, a coalition of parties whose candidate for Prime Minister is Netanyahu.
In short, only massive external pressure can help Palestinians.
On Wednesday, our City Council will vote on divesting in companies involved in Israel's genocide of Gazans and apartheid regime more broadly. It's a start!
Email them in support: council@cambridgema.gov
More broadly, it's a bit like the MMT proposal of a Federal job guarantee, which among other benefits would pressure employers to treat workers better.
Large amounts of decent housing provided by the government pressures landlords to suck less, without needing to legislate or enforce every detail.
Relatedly: "virtue signalling" is usually a good thing because a lot of politics is about setting standards for what is acceptable set of policy options (e.g. who counts as a real person).
As a result, anyone who criticizes an action as "virtue signalling" should be viewed with deep suspicion.
"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets."
Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.
Part 3: How New England's long tradition of local control gives communities a leg up when trying to fight data center development. www.wbur.org/news/2026/10...
This morning, I reminded all of you to get your mail ballots in ASAP. If you're a MA voter and you're flummoxed by all those ballot questions, here's a helpful guide from Progressive Mass.
Why are private equity execs flocking to Question 3?
It's because they think it's a good for their bank accounts and a way to crush nascent working-class populism. I unpack it in the piece here.

For political activist groups who only have an Instagram this would be catastrophic.
So, own your data:
- Buy a domain ($15/year).
- Host a website (cheap to free).
- Collect emails (ActionNetwork lets you pay per send). Back up the list of subscribers.
- Start a Signal group (Meta owns WhatsApp).
❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this.
Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.
Most critical is having your own list of subscriber emails and phone numbers. These can be backed up and moved to any number of services.
Second most critical is having your own domain, so group org email (info@yourgroup.org) can be portable to different email hosting services vs Gmail lock in.
Everyone in the furry universe should be riding bikes.
Like, where are you going to put your huge fluffy tail while sitting in a car?
On a bike it can be free in the wind! You could even use it to signal turns and wave to friends without having to take a hand off the bars.
“…commissioners criticized (and denied) infill housing while quickly approving a (much more expensive per unit) down conversion. They heaped praise on restrictive covenants, long tools of racial and economic exclusion. In other meetings, they’ve said apartment buildings don’t ‘feel residential.’”
Divesting the City from companies complicit in Israel's genocide and apartheid is on the City Council's Monday agenda.
Here's why I support it, as someone who grew up in Israel:

Shoutout to the replies on Reddit. Mostly the usual: gutter racism, Mister Gotcha - thenib.com/mister-gotcha/, potholes potholes potholes, genocide denialism.
But also, an ivermectin fan 🤷
The Toronto Police arrested Aly Van Wyck-Smart, a Paralympian with cerebral palsy who was protecting part of the bike lane from removal.
On the bright side, the construction workers put the bollards back and said we'd won for the day.

While being informed is always good, and I've read some good stuff from Bolts Magazine, the _actual_ best antidote to election anxiety is volunteering and/or donating to campaigns or turnout organizations, insofar as you have time and/or money.
If you’re trying to find a way to deal with election anxiety, the best antidote to doomerism is getting informed.
And this @boltsmag.org guide is still the best information out there:
my "private equity money isn't giving my ballot measure campaign an advantage" t-shirt has people asking a lot of questions already answered by my shirt
former gov candidate fails to secure nomination in partisan primary system. former gov candidate rallies wealthy friends to abolish said system, while insisting that wealth doesn't provide an advantage.

Anyone who tells you not to vote is either malicious or incompetent.
Anyone who claims you _only_ need to vote is either malicious or incompetent.
At worst, voting is harm reduction. At best, it can make things better, some of the time.
Is that enough? No.
Is that useful? Very much so.
On Monday, the Cambridge city council will consider following Somerville's lead (from 2020) by decriminalizing consensual, adult sex work.
I encourage everybody to read the letter linked below and consider adding your name in support.

If you listen to people at City Council speaking against the multi-family zoning, you would think that displacement started last year... Reality is you could ban building new buildings tomorrow and displacement would continue, we know that because that's exactly what happened in my neighborhood.
Is it enough? No. Do we need protection for renters? Yes, but that's the state legislature. But at least we're trying to make displacement result in _replacement units_ and _affordable units_, instead of just displacement, like happened in the Baldwin neighborhood for decades.
And yeah construction next door sucks. Neighboring building is up for sale, advertised for ability to build 6 story building. Right now half is a giant empty parking lot, complete waste of space.
Will I enjoy construction? No.
Will I try to stop housing from being built? Also no.

Without building any new buildings, you still get:
1. New landlord buys a building, new mortgage is much higher, so they raise rent. 19 Forest St complex had that happen.
2. Condo conversions. Renters get kicked out. Happened in place I lived in for a summer in 2005, with no MFH ordinance.
With MFH, 9 Wyman Road turns one $2+ million single family home into 50 units, of which 10 are subsidized affordable. A huge improvement!
Or it turns 3 units into 10, as is happening around the corner. No affordable units, but adding 7 new units to my neighborhood hasn't happened in _decades_.
