Teaching developers @ Cursor, previously @vercel.com

I'm joining Cursor to teach the future of coding! There are millions of developers learning how to use AI and they need pragmatic advice: 1. We need to teach new developers strong foundations, so they know what to learn, and how to solve issues when debugging. (1/5)

This is why some experienced devs are having a great time with AI. They can ask for a pattern like "add an exponential backoff" instead of “make it more robust to errors” which may or may not work.

I want to help developers become an order of magnitude more productive, and help more people contribute to building software. This is going to take a *lot* of education and retraining. So expect more videos soon, and if you have ideas for what I should teach, let me know!

2. We need to teach experienced developers how AI can automate the tedious parts of coding, or save them time reading docs and fixing bugs.

3. We need to help developers become even more competent. AI may end up writing most of your code, but you have to review, understand, and maintain that software.

If you're using AI models, how are you making sure it uses the right version of a given library? llms.txt? MCP? Context7? RAG? Web search? Another acronym? Seems like there's a million ways.

One of the hardest parts about community management is that even after you ship, it sometimes takes *years* for people to update their knowledge of the product.

Idk if anyone has tried to do cost management or real-time usage visibility on AWS, but... it's not easy. And many other platforms like Vercel don't have these spend management tools. I'm really proud of how flexible we are here.

But it's totally fair that this isn't common knowledge. Not everyone is reading the Bluesky or X feed every day. So, the journey continues 🫡

One of the hardest parts about community management is that even after you ship, it sometimes takes *years* for people to update their knowledge of the product.

For example, Vercel has real-time usage visibility, spend limits and alerts, and Firewall rules to prevent unwanted traffic. Want to have a fixed spend? Put a $10 spend limit. Want to prevent unexpected spikes? Add a firewall rate limit. This has gotten massively better in the past few years.

I don't think people realize how obvious it is when you reply to posts with AI slop. There are certain words (cc delve) that are immediate red flags. The vibe just feels off.

Thank you Vercel Plus I get to make the "see you next year" jokes (I'm that guy)

JUST CLOSE THE OFFICE BETWEEN CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEARS. HALF THE PEOPLE AREN'T WORKING AND THE REST OF US DON'T KNOW HOW TO DO THEIR SHIT. MY WHOLE MORNING HAS BEEN ANSWERING EMAILS SAYING "YEAH, I CAN'T DO THAT, YOU'LL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE REAL PERSON IS BACK." FUCK ME

I tried a version with View Transitions — they worked great but I wasn't able to get the animation perfect. Would love to see a fork that does this! I'm sure someone can figure it out 😁

Anothing thing I might try is recreating the multiple levels of zoom, which allows the products to be swiped up and down when fully zoomed on a single product. It also supports pinch gestures. If someone figures this out and makes a PR before me, happy to send you some swag!

I think I've finally figured out the best way to teach next/image, and that's to build a small version from scratch (including the image optimizer) so you really appreciate the abstraction. Working on a video... anything you want to see me touch on here?

Love to see this. @nextjs.org customer incrementally migrated from Pages → App Router with 100,000 lines of code 🤯 "We didn't have to change any core logic of code; components and routes from a year back still work."

One thing that could be handled better is the popcorning of search results. Need something like `<SuspenseList>` 😁

You also can't use any extensions right now. So was hard for me to get a really fast search without any database indexes and also not being able to do something like a trigram search. Maybe there's a better way I don't know of?

The app has a fairly basic database session model. You can vote on any number of movies, one time, per session. The session is stored as a cookie.

Some thoughts on the experience... DSQL is currently an early preview. Lots of things are missing. Especially things to help make queries really fast. For example, you can't add indexes after you add data. But you also can reindex 💀
