#UK #StormBoelo - 24/10 - 2nd storm of the season for the UK, currently winding up to the NW and looking very impressive.

I know the feeling (#Éowyn!) 😅 It might just be my perception, but I find it interesting to see a notable increase in on-the-ground reporting with this particular event and, overall, much more live coverage, even compared to other storm events in the last few years.

It certainly has been quite a pressure roller-coaster this month 📈📉

Dan Holley@danholley.bsky.social

As Storm #Boelo tracks across/close to N/NW Scotland on Saturday night, its central pressure is likely to be 946-949 hPa. The current UK October low MSLP record is 947.9 hPa (Storm Amy 2025). There's a chance we could beat this... just one week after near-record high MSLP! bsky.app/profile/danh...

#UK #StormAusten seen running through the English Channel this morning bringing very strong winds and heavy rain across some areas - 23/10

Atlantic low-pressure activity is ramping up again! 🌬️ Current ECMWF forecasts a series of deep depressions across NW Europe over the coming days, with central pressures potentially falling below 950 hPa and a risk of severe gales. #weather

France appears to have just broken its national 1-hour, 2-hour, and 3-hour rainfall records, pending official confirmation. Solenzara, on the island of Corsica, has recorded a jaw-dropping 380 mm (15 inches) of rain since 9 a.m.

Massive and exceptionally strong mid-latitude cyclone is currently approaching Iceland. Minimum pressure at the centre of the storm may reach sub-930 hPa readings which could be one of the lowest, if not the lowest on record for October in the North Atlantic.

The exceptionally deep Atlantic depression south of Iceland looks spectacular on the latest Airmass RGB satellite imagery. A textbook example of an intense "Norwegian cyclone-type" cyclone. #weather

An exceptionally deep Atlantic low is forecast to develop tonight and tomorrow, with ECMWF predicting a central pressure near 930 hPa. Potentially record-breaking for the month. For context, Iceland’s reported October minimum is 938.4 hPa, recorded at Stórhöfði on 19 October 1963 #weather

Isaias is expected to strengthen and be a strong hurricane when it approaches the northern Gulf Coast on Friday. A life-threatening storm surge is expected along a portion of the northern Gulf Coast, and a Storm Surge Warning is now in effect. Residents should follow advice given by local officials.

September 2026 was the 2nd warmest September on record (2023 was the warmest). 20% of the Earth had their single warmest September on record (since 1940). This is twice the area that was record warm in 2023 (10.1%).

Mushroom season is in full swing here after recent heavy rain, followed by cool, misty mornings and mild afternoons. Found a few clusters of "porcelain fungi" in a nearby forest today. #photography

📉 The Rhine in Bonn is currently exceptionally low at just 59 cm. For context: • Mean height: ~290 cm • Previous 2018 record low: 81 cm Despite a slight bump expected from heavier rain this Thu/Fri, gauge heights are predicted to stay very low heading into early October. #hydrology

Extreme rainfall ongoing across southern France, with some stations already reporting around 300 mm since the event began late Tuesday. Above-normal SSTs in the western Mediterranean are also contributing to an enhanced moisture supply #weather

Paris, France, has now recorded 100 days above 25°C (77°F) in 2026 so far. This has never happened before in a calendar year since records began 154 years ago, in 1872.

🌡 August #C3S Climate Bulletin reports that August was the joint-warmest month on record & 1.65°C above the estimated pre-industrial level. Western Europe saw its warmest summer on record, while the average sea surface temperature across the extra-polar ocean was also the joint highest on record. ⬇️

It is premature to attribute the Nepal disaster to climate change: we cannot yet say how much warming temperatures and melting glaciers contributed to this specific event. But risks of glacier collapse in a warming Himalaya are clearly growing. My latest at The Climate Brink:

theclimatebrink.comWhat we can and cannot say about climate change and the Nepal disasterFormal attribution is premature, but the collapse happened on a rapidly warming mountain in a valley losing its ice

Last night's storms in central and eastern Belgium didn't turn out to be quite as intense as initially expected (they ended up being mainly elevated and weakened by previous mid-level cloud/dust and convection), but there were some nice moments anyway. #weather #photography

August 24th, 1992: One of America's most infamous hurricanes slammed southern Florida. Andrew was one of only four hurricanes to strike the US as a Category 5. The storm damaged/destroyed over 160,000 structures (mainly from wind) and killed 44 people in the state.

Tornado in the Aude Département in S France just now.

Potentially significant severe weather likely across NE Spain/S France today. The broad-scale setup then remains favourable for additional strong to severe thunderstorms later this week, particularly across France, the Benelux and SW Germany. #weather

And we have a new all-time record warm *absolute* temperature for the oceans, according to ERA5 (which goes back to 1940): August 21st likely marked the warmest Sea Surface Temperatures have been for the entire Holocene period. Should be major news!

A severe weather and #tornado outbreak occurred on 19.08.2026. The German Tornado Expert Group (TOREX) is working intensively on the analysis of this event. DWD is also part of TOREX, jointly analyzes the large amount of info available. A first overview map showing the results has now been created.

Jackpot! After many weeks of mainly hot and dry weather which resulted in exceptional wildfires (for this part of the world) and record-low river levels just a week ago, thundery rain produced over half of the average August rainfall in under 12 hours here and in the immediate surroundings. #weather

Once again there's a smell of burned wood in the air today. The air quality in the greater Bonn area remains moderate to poor due to further smoke from the #highfens #wildfire that is being advected to the ENE.

Beneficial rain showers are moving across the state of NRW and nearby Belgium...but part of that rainfall evaporates as the sub-cloud layer is still very dry, including in the vicinity of the two major wildfires near Aachen (shown in blue). Any amounts will be too small to help weaken the fires.

Climate change increases the frequency and duration of droughts and fire weather conditions — it makes fires worse. But it doesn't start them. 90–95% of wildfires are ignited by humans, deliberately or accidentally. The remaining few percent are caused by lightning.

The forest fire in Belgium (Hohe Venn) looks really bad. Its smoke plume now extends far eastward. It was already quite smoky in large parts of Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia, but with this rapidly escalating fire in Belgium, it is now much worse.

Very large (by regional standards) wildfire in the Nordeifel hills west of #Cologne since yesterday. Fire weather conditions continue with very dry fuels, extremely low RH and high temperatures. Winds aren't particularly strong, though, thankfully. #fireweather ga.de/region/vorei...

Extremely low relative humidity readings once again across large parts of W Europe this afternoon, down to 15 or 10% in a few locations. Wildfire risk remains very high even though winds aren't that much of a factor. #weather #drought

GFS once again doing its thing up there 🫠 A timely reminder of the importance of using a model blend and not rely on single model outputs with all inherent biases, especially during significant events like the current n-th heatwave. #weather

A selection of models for a location in SE London tomorrow at 4pm. Take your pick: although again a suggestion that dry-bulb maximum predicted is linked somewhat to how dry the ground/atmosphere is within the models?

In terms of temperature anomaly for the last three months (MJJ 2026 period), France is the most anomalous country in the world with +2.8 °C above the 1991-2020 average.

Things aren't much better across the pond as far as excessive heat is concerned. At least we get a bit of a break in western Europe right now before temps rise again from Saturday...I for one am looking forward to autumn now. #weather

This year has been one for the books so far with record-shattering heat across much of the western U.S. This map shows the temperature rankings (all of the maroon 1s are record hot, red 2s are second hottest, etc). From Texas to Montana and California to Arkansas. 🥵🥵

August 3, 2008: France's most recent violent tornado ravaged several communities. Per the ESSL, the F4 had a 10.5-kilometer-long path and was up to 200 meters wide. Hundreds of homes and other buildings were damaged or destroyed in Hautmont. Three people were killed.

Sub-surface Pacific temperatures are now warmer than ever recorded having exceeded 1997's peak by 0.36°C. Further warming is still likely before they peak, little doubt now that this will be the strongest El Nino event in recorded history.

It’s now official: June–July 2026 was the most anomalously warm two-month period ever recorded in France by a staggering margin. France is now virtually certain to record its warmest summer on record.

Extremely warm and dry midday profiles ahead of the line of showers and storms in W Germany today. Hybrid/inverted-V profiles supporting strong outflow and locally damaging winds as the storms generate increasingly large cold pools this afternoon. #weather

Some smoke has made it's way from France to far W and SW Germany with an increase in aerosol content before the arrival of the gusty line of showers and storms. The plot on the right shows ceilometer data from near Bonn, Germany. #weather

Thursday is a potentially big weather day for Germany in particular. Extreme heat followed by high-based thunderstorms with a significant wind, dust and wildfire risk in many areas. Another situation that has previously been pretty rare. #weather
