While we all process this, Turkopticon would like to remind everyone, we are still here and we will go where our workers go. Stay tuned as we figure out where some of our favorite requesters are heading.
Amazon is officially shutting down Mechanical Turk next month. It feels like the end of an era.
I've written about the platform on and off for close to a decade. We wouldn't have the AI tools we do now if it weren't for the low-paid, largely invisible labor of MTurkers
UPCOMING EVENT: Join us on Wednesday, September 23 at 4:00 - 5:30 PM ET for Feeling the Future: Asian/Americanist Takes on Techno-Empire, Chinamaxxing, & the “American Century of Humiliation."
🎤 Featuring Brian J. Chen, Julie Chu, Jasmine Ehrhardt, & Paul Kim in conversation with Lisa Nakamura.
"Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia combined use 30+ intermediary companies for data work, ranging from outsourcing companies to crowdwork platforms...and **influence working conditions** thru pricing pressures, tight deadlines & by shifting contracts between vendors"
Powerful thread 👇🏼

And as @somoamsterdam.bsky.social noted, confirmed by our research at TechEquity, Amazon operates as: customer, investor and cloud provider of data work services. “This increases its responsibility towards AI supply chain workers.” www.somo.nl/big-tech-set...
Julián Posada, a professor at Yale University, speaks about AI data work that is outsourced to Venezuela. The workers, some of whom are paid as little as 50 cents per hour, “would not know who the employers were or what even the AI they were helping develop is.”
🗓️ Our next speaker event:
"Journalism and Tech Labor: Local news in the era of algorithms" on Monday, Aug 31 @ 11:00 am (ET US)
Speakers: Angilee Shah, Vanan Murugesan, Orlando Bailey, Lauren Gustus
Members, check email for Zoom / Non-members, RSVP to Angelica angelica.martinez.ochoa@gmail.com
The article examined the fragmented and hierarchical systems for the AI data labor supply in China. Please give it a read if you are interested in labor tech.

Mechanical Turk may be shutting down, but AI will always depend on data workers whose knowledge trains and tunes models.
AI runs on extracted cultural skills and knowledge, and culture is always changing.
Less the end of an era, but the end of an early prototype.

These newsroom executives will talk about what keeps them going in the most challenging conditions, what keeps them up at night, and how they are planning for a future with AI and the capital investments flowing into tech companies today

We see a collapse of local independent journalism, fueled by corporate consolidation, algorithmic exclusion, and shrinking investments in value-driven reporting.
The workers and activists in big tech and the way communities are informed (or disinformed or misinformed) are intimately connected.
There are bright spots, however. Some local news organizations have cut through the algorithms to reach their communities, to build trust and direct relationships. This is a panel of news leaders at the front of conversations about how local news can be reimagined.

In the US today, we are experiencing many forms for what scholar Victor Picard calls “media capture,” from legal and financial to technological. (lpeproject.org/blog/the-ame...).

🔇 🔇 🔇 My book, Deep Unlearning, is now available for preorders! I don't know how people write so many books because this one took a lot out of me. It turns out, I had a lot to say 😂, with editors cutting out 50k of my words 🫣

Texas Tech is using AI to seek out content on sexual orientation & gender identity. Professors describe the effort as a dystopian academic nightmare.
One professor worried about her core course, Holocaust in Literature, because it mentions that gay & bisexual men were also targets of the Nazis...
My book AGAINST TECH OLIGARCHY, out Sept 15, is available for pre-order at againsttecholigarchy.com. It chronicles the rise of tech workers' activism, how they courageously came together to challenge the industry's most powerful bosses, and how their movement changed Silicon Valley forever. 1/
livestream video has been resistant to this sort of mining until now - too much, too big, too ephemeral, too contextual, and no software to do it relatively cheaply until now
everyone with a Twitch account is automatically opted in to Amazon using your stream to train its AI models. you have to deliberately opt out - a feature the platform is positioning as a nice little favor to its users :) www.404media.co/twitch-train...
We’ve been hearing horrific stories from our members: tenured faculty being fired in batches, gender and history departments being shut down, million dollar grants being rescinded, immigrant students being targeted, campus activists arrested, etc.
Dr. Chaar López is an American studies professor at University of Texas Austin, and an esteemed scholar doing critical research on border-surveillance. He received a near-unanimous recommendation from faculty and outstanding external support letters but was still denied tenure without explanation.

This is without a doubt the worst time for scholars in recent history. Please support one of our members under attack by a right wing campaign on higher education in Texas: Dr. Iván Chaar López.
Without game developers, there are no video games. Join us across nine cities next Tuesday, August 18th, as we rally for the rights of workers in the games industry.
