It was hard to get good results from the old diffusion models. But when you struck gold it was so compelling! You can't replicate this aesthetic with modern models. I've tried, but they're told coherent.

Pope Francis is dead even in his race with other cardinals to have breakfast in his armchair.

AFP News Agency@en.afp.com

Pope Francis passed another peaceful night in hospital, "got up and had breakfast in his armchair", the Vatican said Thursday, the day after reporting a slight improvement in his condition. https://u.afp.com/SotH

I’m glad aliens don’t have privileged access to *my* self-deceptive reasoning processes, because they would definitely be laughing at them on alien social media

I tried to ask DeepSeek R1 in Finnish if it thinks privately in English first before answering in Finnish. It thought in English and then answered in Finnish saying there's no hidden processing and everything happens in Finnish. Alt text has Finnish parts translated to English, by DeepSeek.

Nothing says alpha like leaving your multimillion dollar island compound to fly 8+ hours to have dinner with the guy who said he wants to put you in jail, and then fly straight back.

We didn't get Data. Instead we created Lore.

The thing that is hard to get about LLMs is that we expected AI to be awesome at math & be all cool logic. Instead, AI is best at human-like tasks (eg writing) & is all hot, weird simulated emotion. For example, if you make GPT-3.5 “anxious,” it changes its behavior! arxiv.org/abs/2304.11111

I love combining BigGAN gens with more modern tools. Leonardo AI makes this very easy. Without further ado I present transcendental cat in HD technicolor! Fully remastered! Fully restored!

oldschoool gens with BigGAN+CLIP. This one is "transcendental cat" I'm no expert on transcendental beings or cats. But this looks scientifically accurate to me

"Birch Tree: Unwrapped" This is a bit of accidental art that really delighted me. It's a 3D model of a birch tree, deconstructed so that I could 'bake' the lighting and texture into a single image. The effect is a kind of 'knolling' where the pieces are arrayed just so. Made in #Houdini

I'll always remember how, right from the beginning of the pandemic, all the public announcements emphasised how many of the people killed had pre-existing conditions. As if people with pre-existing conditions weren't full people, weren't just as full of life, just as loved as anyone else.

Hank Green is so ambitious. It's exhausting. My life is like being the co-author of the Federalist Papers. I'm all like, "John Jay got sick after writing five." And Hank's like, "HAMILTON WROTE THE OTHER FIFTY ONE."

"a horse in space" created with bigsleep in 2021. How far things have come in 3 years. Feels like a decade ago. Even still I love these early gens. It's like the world viewed through the eyes of an alien intelligence.

Floating some ideas for OpenAI since we reached the end of scaling: + MattGPT, where it’s just like the original but it only replies in the tone of this guy you went to third grade with + CatGPT, self/explanatory, internet is made of cats anyway, people will always pay for cats + BatGPT—

Did one last pass with Sky Follower Bridge; now I'll unfollow everyone on X and leave the locked acct as an empty husk to hold the handle. I don't mind my posts being scraped for training; that's how a starship in orbit around Antares ends up wondering where it got a preference for Keemun tea

This is cool

Okay, one more random tip for newbies: if someone quote-skeets (yes, they're called skeets, shut up) you in a way to dunk on your or annoy you, you can "detach" your skeet from the quote, so that it no longer shows. This is also useful in ending brigading attacks.

Pairing Elon and Vivek is like a buddy comedy written by someone who doesn’t understand buddies or comedy

Steve Vladeck@stevevladeck.bsky.social

Not sure whether the Elon/Vivek "DOGE" frolic is going to raise more Anti-Deficiency Act issues (by doing stuff) or Federal Advisory Committee Act issues (by proposing stuff). But it'll sure be a litigation bonanza, either way...
