RIP Walter Koenig, who I'll remember as both Chekov and Bester. Met him at a Star Trek con when I was in HS, and I remember him being such a nice and humble guy.

Additionally, helmeted cyclists may behave more riskily, and motorists have been shown to drive more dangerously around helmeted cyclists. When you add in the fact that the enforcement of such laws is disproportionately targeted at poorer, less white people, this starts to become a real problem.
If you really want to make things safer for people on bikes, give us infrastructure that protects us from motor vehicles. It pays for itself.
Similarly, being an un-helmeted cyclist is associated with lower mortality than being a sedentary driver, and helmet laws turn what would have been the former into the latter at a much larger scale than they prevent serious head injury. (Helmet LAWS, not helmets. Helmets are great. β€οΈ helmets)
As an instructive example, the NTSB has long lobbied the FAA to require children under 2 to have their own seat with an approved car seat because they believe having a car seat is safer than not having a car seat. However, the FAA has so far refused to implement this policy. Why?

Iβm so tired of this framing. Most of these injuries are riders being hit by drivers. I was injured while riding a scooter earlier this year - because I was hit by a law-breaking driver. The result would have been the same if Iβd been on a bike. Letβs focus on the biggest problem first, please.
Children account for 45% of e-scooter injuries and, according to one trauma nurse, several D.C. riders end up in their ER every week. Should e-scooters be banned? 51st.news/dc-experts-w...
This arterial looks like a freeway. It's no surprise that people drive on it like it is a freeway. I'm worried about the exact same thing happening to NE 85th St. with all the widening and huge freeway-like signs being installed as part of the interchange rebuild.
Cyclist killed at Bellevue Way SE and SE 30th Street. Not good.

I'm often asked why I'm an urbanist and why I'm civically involved. I definitely care about efficiency, the environment, social justice, the housing and affordability crisis, and public health. But what truly gets me out of bed is my desire for a community where we're more connected.

Saying we shouldn't tax the portion of income over $1,000,000/year because it means we will soon tax everyone is like saying we shouldn't lock up people for murder because it means we will soon lock up people for parking illegally. We get to choose what makes sense.

It can be tough to follow all the public meetings - found a tool (supadata.ai/r/NJHZFTG0) that provides YT transcripts (including of posted live broadcasts) that make it much quicker to search through what actually happened in the meeting so you can find the places to tune in.

A really tough thing that canvassers don't usually talk about is that every time you knock on a door inside an apartment building, a locked courtyard or even just a long driveway, there's a small chance the person will react as if you literally climbed into their living room through an open window.π§΅
