I got sufficiently excited about librepaper that I'm in the process of trying to self-host it. In the wake I also subscribed to an email service provider (Soverin) to slowly start getting rid of Gmail.

I would simply prompt "pretend you're a 60-year-old republican on 2026-10-08 and fill out this survey"

Colin@colin-fraser.net

“pretend you are a 60 year old $75,000 earning republican and fill out this survey” and then you can weight the responses by how many 60 year old $75,000 earning republicans there are.

Surveys show that at least where I live, the 21st century has seen people shift their values from prioritizing their own needs towards prioritizing the needs of others.

i challenge you to post one optimistic take or belief today on bluesky this needn’t be toxic positivity, just good ol’ run of the mill optimism/hope in the face of a torrential downpour of doom

Inspired by a @f2harrell.bsky.social comment, I did some #rstats simulations about how big a sample needs to be for the central limit theorem to kick in and the sample mean be normally distributed for inference purposes. Yes, with skewed data the answer is "lots". freerangestats.info/blog/2026/09...

This is absolutely insane. Don't pay for-profit publishers APCs. Don't let your collaborators do it either. Post preprints of your work, post your work on pubmed central, but for fucks sake stop sending hard-earned grant dollars to these publishing conglomerates

Eric Schares@eschares.bsky.social

🚨Update: Our analysis of global APC expenditure has now been expanded to cover more publishers (7 -> 14) and more years (2019-2025). We estimate $15B in APCs paid over seven years, $3.7B in 2025 alone. Elsevier crosses the $1B threshold by itself in 2025. arxiv.org/abs/2608.16322 #ScholComm

So if 40/42 studies in the meta are cross-sectional, it’s very reasonable to alternatively conclude that people who have more attention and self-regulation problems are more likely to be drawn to scrolling TikToks

Jay Van Bavel, PhD@jayvanbavel.bsky.social

Is doomscrolling bad for you? A meta-analysis of 42 studies (N=46,912) finds that consuming short-form videos is linked to increases in inattention & impulsivity; reductions in working-memory span & self-regulation; elevations in anxiety, depression & stress; and a surge in addiction symptoms.

Now someone do the same but for op-ed pieces.

Social media discourse is driven by false #polarization We find that: 1) ideologues post opinions more than moderates 2) extreme attitudes are posted more than moderate one 3) This replicates in 40 countries 4) Opinions that users post are more hostile than the beliefs they keep to themselves

Off to #ESAWarsaw2026. Boat ride from Helsinki to Tallinn done, now on the train to Vilnius. Tomorrow the final train to Warsaw! Good thing I brought something to pass the time with. #statssky

I've finally decided a task I keep doing over and over at work merits building an #rstats package for it. This will the first package I'll make. Wish me luck.

I have convinced my partner that we should start playing Blood Bowl, but their condition is that they get to play as the Gnomes. It might be that we will both have to play Gnomes. Look at these minis!!! (Especially the fox with the ball and the goose).

Probably the last one I'm finishing before summer vacation is over. I'm quite happy with how the color gradations on the skin and the loincloth turned out with this one!

Konsta Happonen@konsta.happonen.eu

Deep one coming along. Painting minis is such a nice way to turn your brain off. It requires just enough focus that your mind can't really wander, but not too much to feel exhausting.

Suomi mainittu, torille. It's been wonderful seeing the city transform to be much more pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly, though much remains to be done.

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Helsinki hasn’t registered a single traffic-related fatality in the past year…Citing data that shows the risk of pedestrian fatality is cut in half by reducing a car’s speed from 40 to 30km/hr, city officials imposed the lower limit in most of Helsinki’s residential areas and city center in 2021.”

One of my favourite new things here is the Kruunuvuorensilta bridge. The longest in Finland, and it has exactly zero lanes for cars: only pedestrians, cyclists and trams allowed.

AC and other cooling measures are increasingly necessary even in places where they weren't before. AC increases energy consumption and is often used when not strictly necessary. Both things can be true at the same time.
