latest version of freeglut runs on kubuntu 6.06 with very little changes, on my retro computer

once again I am asking that social media platforms include a "seen" or "noticed" reaction 1. I think it would be funny 2. I don't think everything deserves a "like"

had to stop tinkering with my pentium 3 computer because the -12v rail started floating at +0.2v and the motherboard was reporting voltage issues among other instabilities. Maybe reusing the early 2000s DELL capacitor plague PSU was a bad idea

The 3.3v rail was also quite hot at 3.5v, though the bios didn't report it as an issue. I bought a new PSU tho and am waiting for it to arrive to see if it also fixes the other hard drive I have not being able to initialize correctly

realizing that GCC is compiled with GCC and that I can compile a newer version of GCC to bootstrap into compiling an even newer version of GCC is incredible

single most yucky thing about unix filesystems imo is the executable flag cus it's directly tied to the filesystem metadata instead of the actual format or extension

rate the setup :fire emoji: the most interesting thing I learned about getting neofetch to run on ubuntu 6.06 is that it automatically runs using the local version of bash if it's available. I had to compile a newer bash version to get it to run (and ironically it would run just fine on 8.04)

it's 3 AM and I have accomplished my stupid goal of getting a modern version of dillo to compile on ubuntu 6.06 on my pentium 3 machine

Would you believe our game is built from basically just 1 texture?

I installed Ubuntu 8.04 on my pentium 3 machine and it runs surprisingly well with the proper drivers, even got classicube compiled and running with some small tweaks

a couple of performance tweaks later (switching to 16-bit color, forcing disabling font anti aliasing and using a simple theme)

is there a particular reason images take so long to load on witchsky when it should be using the same CDN as bluesky?

I'd like to play around with bare X11+OpenGL in C but the idea of distro compatibility bothers me, wonder if I could link against something like the scout steam runtime to get the biggest range of compatibility. Not that anyone is unironically using Ubuntu 12.04 in 2026, but it would be fun to do

I still see a lot of confusion about what decompilation, recompilation and ports are and what level of effort is involved in each type of project. It's important that people understand the difference, as recompilation took a drastically different meaning that when it was originally introduced.
