What if Calgary instead said to the province that we need them to help clean up these parcels of land so homes could be built there instead? 🤷‍♂️

Last week the City of Calgary comms department told me The Sprawl puts in "big asks" to their department. I like that. BIG-ASK JOURNALISM. It has a nice ring to it. May use in a future crowdfunding campaign

When activist journalism goes.... waaaaaaaay too far. A disgrace.

STORY, updates to come: Edmonton former journalist Duncan Kinney has admitted to spray painting a bust of Ukrainian World War II leader Roman Shukhevych with the words "actual Nazi," then writing about it, claiming he didn't know who did it. edmontonjournal.com/news/crime/d...

A great read from @klaszus.bsky.social as always. Thank you for writing this! I continue to be dumbfounded by anyone that argues against safer streets after reading the stats in this piece. We know what works, & it's not letting drivers behave recklessly & drive fast.

A decade ago, Calgary city council approved a new pedestrian strategy that aimed to dramatically reduce carnage on city streets by 2025. Instead the opposite happened. We dig into why—and what comes next. #yyccc

Just found out from this article that two streets in our neighborhood (Northmount Dr NW and Bulyea Drive NW) will have their speed limits reduced to 40 Kph. 🎉🎉🎉 About time.

On a side note, I realized partway through doing this story that it should have been a Sprawlcast. But I was too late in that realization. Hence—readable version only on this one. But another Sprawlcast coming soonish!

Thinking it's time to print brothels on The Sprawl's Pop-Up Press. Yes, brothels. Not this week, trying to get a piece finished for this weekend, but maybe Monday or Tuesday. You heard it here first!

Also common now: greeting someone in the neighbourhood with a "hello" and getting no response. They can't even hear it. But I guess listening to a bunch of podcasts makes one "smarter"...

When I’m walking down the street, almost half the people walking towards me have their heads bowed. So respectful! 🙃

Join us Sat Sept 26 to celebrate The Sprawl's 9th anniversary! At Two Pillars Brewery from 2-4pm. Will have the Pop-Up Press and @calgaryhester.bsky.social will be there to sign prints. Would love to see ya there! 🍻 (there's also good coffee next door if you'd rather do coffee than beer!)

I want to go to New York City again but am not traveling to the U.S. at all. So no NYC. Fond memories of when I was there in 2017 though. Would get up early and go to this plaza to read the paper.

It is mortifying to find a typo in a piece you just published. Doubly so when it's in the text AND a pull quote. Although I'm told typos now indicate a human touch and that they are, in our time, kind of a good thing. Okay. Suuuure. But a good editor should not be happy with typos.

Today we published a tribute to beloved Calgary historian Harry Sanders. “He always had a story about the people that made the place.”

No one's into this but I'm willing to go as high as $90 for the naming rights

Calgary city hall is again seeking a sponsor for the CTrain Free Fare Zone. Time for the Sprawl Free Fare Zone! Everything has been leading to this

This morning's special council meeting on Cllr. Johnston leaking budget info was a classic case of "this could have been an email." Council can't do anything (prov killed muni codes of conduct), votes to have mayor write letter to Min. Williams. Johnston vs Farkas is theatrics vs theatrics. #yyccc
