I do appreciate being able to have a conversation with a LLM about what my forest goblins would use as a flux for glazing pottery fermentation crocks. (wood ash, though it requires a better kiln)

The most stressful part of leading an engineering team these days is knowing that no matter how many people you have working on security and how good they are, it isn’t enough.

Have the team onsite this week. 3 separate people 3D printed custom fidgets. Though only one of them was in the shape of clickable dumpster fire

🚀 🎙️ It's launch day! Introducing our new podcast: Make Great Software with Chris & Gina. It's about the thing I still love the most: bringing ideas to life with code & computers. If hanging with a couple of friends talking about software is your thing, subscribe anywhere you get your podcasts.

Team did a surprising thing. I immediately started solutioning. As a leader my job is to take that solutioning and throw it away and instead ask the team, “why?”. The relevant quote is, “process is the embedded response to prior stupidity.” That’s not how we talk anymore. But it’s clear.

In this case the problem got solved not because of any process but because an individual saw an issue and got curious. Heroism has toxic impacts. But ownership beats process. That’s your job to navigate.

My brother turned 45 today. I was trying to think of what advice I have for 45, and the only advice I really have is that the elapsed time between 45 and 50 is measured in weeks if not days.

The AI alignment question is interesting: if we can align AI with human flourishing than presumably we can also align techbros with human flourishing.

Hanging out at the coffee shop in Hudson Valley eavesdropping on the PE guys fantasizing about being able to retire early to do way more meditation and psychedelics.

NEW | California just reached a world-first solar milestone Over HALF (51%) of electricity generation across the whole month of May came from solar power. Battery storage is the big difference maker, enabling California to push the share of solar generation to this level.

Came in rooting for Spain, but damn Martinez! It’s like he plays for a higher league than the rest of the mere humans.

I wonder, if you polled people, how much extra they would pay each year to have their city *not* be covered in thick, choking wildfire smoke for days at a time. I wonder if that might give you more insight into "willingness to pay" vis a vis climate change than asking in the abstract.

I keep hearing folks talk about the loss of flow state with agentic coding, and as a long time exec agentic coding is the highest flow state activity I’ve done in a decade+.

OH: “Also programming is an activity which clearly happens far from God’s light and as such getting a machine to do it isn’t an abomination”

Strange phenomena being in the Bay Area in nominally liberally coded environment and encountering folks who just assumed that consensus reality was that Mamdani was terrible and that of course I agreed.

Spent the weekend in the Bay Area talking with 100+ technologists, and thinkers about AI — and my takeaway is the primary challenge, limitations and existential risk in the tech is that folks are accepting the ways in its accelerating wealth inequality.

A 100 years ago we slipped "engaging tuna blasters" into status reports to see if anyone was reading them. Today Claude tried to add a random DuckDb/parquet dependency to a simple sqlite backed app, and I'm sure it was just checking if I was paying attention.

The frustrating part of this of course is there is a better and cheaper approach using solar, battery, and light grid interconnect that would improve the infrastructure for the region without killing people. Killing people has to be your goal to go this way.

This post is unavailable.

Plus of course the added knowledge that Xai can’t even use this capacity because no one wants their model and they have to resell it.

Now that someone has built this I can cross this 9 year old todo off my list!

Handy app: “Point your camera at anything (a dress, a paint swatch, a flower, your kid’s drawing) and What Color Is This? names the color instantly.” I like the increasingly specific color labels (e.g. blue to light blue to Tiffany blue). [apps.apple.com]
