We could save a lot of the Federal budget if we just didn't give the military weapons and it would be safer for basically everyone

I think LLM’s are pretty close to blockchain where it‘s conceptually interesting and smart people think it should have immense utility but one by one every use-case erodes until the only thing left is crime and scams

No joke, it's sad that even homeless eccentrics have gotten hooked on AI. Wonderful weirdos who might've found themselves compelled to scavenge banners and paint wild murals on them, instead just falling into a hole where their fleeting paranoias are being confirmed and elaborated upon by a chatbot.

I'm not just talking theoretically, I have literally now run into an unhoused bloke deep into AI-fueled psychosis and it struck me how much worse and also uniform mental problems must be getting.

Never liked Ed Sheeran, another W for my kneejerk distaste for someone's art coinciding with them being eventually revealed as objectively a bad person; like something I hate at your own peril

I am aware that there is a common misapprehension that I am cool and normal and let me be clear: this is false. I am a worm. A wriggling little worm.

Centrist defenses usually involve some incrementalism, that things are gradually getting better but if your candidates are getting elected while agreeing to curtail these rights in certain respects, the incrementalism is going the other way. It’s just getting worse.

I mean nothing *can* change? an LLM remains a syntax engine incapable of engaging with communicative intent [pragmatics] or mapping between words and things [semantics]. If you have a syntax problem that's fine but the only people who do are "people using a programming language they are bad at".

hailey@hailey.at

one thing i will say is that things are changing fast enough that if your priors are more than a month old, you need to challenge them again! astra for example is a very significant step forward for a lot of people's tasks.

Adding another item to the long list of things Republicans fervently believe and I go "buddy, I fuckin' wish"

no matter how you slice it we're going to need to overthrow capitalism to keep all of us safe. the rich and powerful have always targeted minorities to stave off class war and will continue to do so forever if we let them as we have.

Jay Willis@jaywillis.net

For me, the biggest takeaway from Sophie Cunningham’s hard launch into the right-wing culture wars is how *lucrative* bigotry is now. There’s an entire conservative media ecosystem that will turn anyone willing to make transphobia their personal brand into a well-compensated star.

The most important thing for people of bad faith to accomplish is the total memory-holing of the Summer of 2020, when solidarity across race and class around a host of social justice issues was on full display (MLB players were participating!). It was a threat so dire, it birthed thousands of liars.

even if you really think it's true that Republicans are "secretly cheering" Canada--why the fuck would you say this if you are a prominent Democrat several weeks away from the midterms. Your job should be to tie this shitty party to their unpopular leader that 70% of the country despises

Went to a bar earlier tonight where there was music playing everywhere else but in one of the single-occupent restrooms the speaker was instead playing an audiobook of Dune

Increasingly convinced people shouldn't be able to lock replies or quotes. Yeah, yeah, that becomes a problem with big accounts, but *that* is solved by having an account size cap and when you go over it you prestige to Postergame+ and start again with zero followers

And locking quotes only makes sense in a world without screenshot attachments, which to be clear I am *also* for that policy change, can you honestly tell me you're sure going back a pure-text social internet wouldn't be a good thing? No you cannot

half the discourse on this website is from the most insecure writers you know writing the stupidest shit you imagine and the other half is from people who are usually insecure resistlib white dudes who are desperate to convince you that people are wrong to criticize them

My longstanding assertion is that spreadsheets are never the right tool for a job, and nobody has ever come back at me with a convincing counterexample (My cheat here is that databases exist, and databases > spreadsheets)

Ned Resnikoff@resnikoff.bsky.social

Type of guy who wants a completely planned economy but also constantly disparages spreadsheet people is an amazingly common type of guy on the Internet. Who exactly do you think is going to be planning your socialist economy.

Counterpoint: when the entire weight of the U.S. speculative finance economy is pushing something then anything less than total rejection is indistinguishable from quisling acquiescence

The media relentlessly promotes the narrative that progressives are too mean to anti-vaxxers and we must bring them around with compassion. This isn't true and isn't helping. The more public sympathy you show them, the more empowered they are in their beliefs. www.statnews.com/2026/08/19/s...

People still think Y2K was a hoax because nothing bad happened when really the crisis was averted because of a massive effort to fix it ahead of January 1, 2000 This does not portend well for unix end of time in 2038

Thrawn bordered on that in the EU, and now in the Disney canon it's just 100% true Especially true in the Ahsoka show, where the "heroes" of Rebels and Clone Wars are almost jaw-droppingly horrible, mass-murdering and destroying millenia-old culture, Thrawn would never

Sophia_Nyx 🐰@sophianyx.bsky.social

Name a villain who was actually right.

Like of course Timothy Zahn's borderline self-insert character is always right in the new canon books he wrote, but it's wild how Filoni's show makes the good guys so reprehensible that their antagonists are legitimately the defensible side. Relatedly, the witches in that & Acolyte also innocent.

20 some years ago the government banned online poker in the U.S. and now it feels like the main problem they had with it is not the online gambling, but that poker is a game wherein at least a few of the players win.

More than a quarter of American adults have a daily gambling habit, 42 percent of bettors have said they spend more than they should, and a majority of men ages eighteen to forty-nine have an active account with an online sportsbook.

I got to know Senator Lindsey Graham traveling with him abroad in Afghanistan and Ukraine. We had just met to renew the fight for our Big Tech bill. Even though we disagreed on much, he was always willing to negotiate, with humor and wit. My heart goes out to his loved ones.

The party leadership hates Zohran because he’s Muslim and antizionist, to be sure — but the real reason he’s so dangerous to them is because he reminds voters that elected officials are supposed to make your life better, and half the time it’s not even that hard for them to do it

I've ALWAYS wanted to write a reported story on bike theft. This one is doozy—a teenaged thief who stole $50,000 worth of bikes in Silicon Valley. Big surprise, the police did next to nothing. Here’s how the victims got their bikes back with DIY detective work. escapecollective.com/a-thief-took...

i feel like that has to do with the fact that it's big dumb and flashy and it conforms to our preconceptions of what futuristic technology is, same issue with why we put insane amounts of money and publicity into specifically robotaxis and chatbot assistants and not other types of machine learning
