🚨 The actual paper is now out on @cp-trendscognsci.bsky.social: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... In this opinion piece, @duncanastle.bsky.social and I explore the human brain through the lens of optimality and Pareto-optimality theory.

For all the esteemed scholars out there who prefer gaining knowledge the correct way, here’s a summary of our upcoming opinion piece, delivered to you by Jesus himself. But seriously, science communication is about to get a lot worse and better at the same time.

Cambridge locals: we’re starting our seminars. Come hang out!

Complex Networks at Cambridge@camnetsnet.bsky.social

Join us this Friday the 30th of October for our first Michaelmas seminar talk! Dr @rnartallo.bsky.social is a research associate in the Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics (DAMTP) at the University of Cambridge. Find this event and others: www.cnn.group.cam.ac.uk.

Folks, quick reminder that this is happening this Thursday at 10:00 UK time so don’t forget to register. If you know Caio you know but if you don’t, he’s very talented at giving pedagogic talks so I’m sure there’s something for everyone in there.

🚨 We're starting this term's Making Connections Seminar Series with Caio Seguin on neural communication in C. elegans. Mind the unusual timing: it'll be on Thursday, Oct 29th, but at 10:00 UK time. You can find the registration link and our lineup of this term here: sites.google.com/view/makingc...

It’s less than 10 days until we start reviewing applications for our postdoc position @mpicybernetics.bsky.social, if you’re interested in cross-species studies of adaptive decision-making, make sure to submit your applications by Oct 30. The deadline for our PhD position is also approaching!

Shervin Safavi@neuroprinciplist.bsky.social

Link to ads: Postdoc position: nextcloud.tuebingen.mpg.de/index.php/s/... PhD position: nextcloud.tuebingen.mpg.de/index.php/s/... We’re also both at @bernsteinneuro.bsky.social and happy to chat!

So excited to share that I will be starting my research group at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology! 🥳 My lab will study curiosity and exploration across biological (and artificial) minds. I will recruit a PhD, a postdoc and an RA in the coming months, so please spread the word!

𝗛𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻 New preprint with Andrea Gambarotto. Neuroscience often treats control as a hierarchy: the structures behind a behavior hold a stable rank. We argue this mistakes a configuration for an architecture. 🧵 arxiv.org/abs/2610.04643 #neuroskyence

I hope this year’s Nobel prize has the same effect on optogenetics and brain manipulation as it had on place and grid cells after the Mosers. I think we need a lot more of these type of research. We should be able to scale it to multiple sites at the same time. Let’s goooooooo the time is now.

Check out this awesome work by @goliashf.bsky.social -- now out in PLOS Biology -- showing that development of intrinsic neural timescale aligns with the cortical hierarchy defined by the S-A axis in multiple datasets.

Golia Shafiei@goliashf.bsky.social

So excited that our work is now published in PLOS Biology!! 🎉 Check out the final version here: doi.org/10.1371/jour... And for a bit more context and what we found, here’s our earlier thread: bsky.app/profile/goli...

This collection is extremely useful for sure but I think this map specifically is a great reminder that very similar time series can arise from distinct mechanisms. Degeneracy is such a fascinating phenomenon and perhaps unfortunately for us, ubiquitous in nature.

Ben Fulcher@bendfulcher.bsky.social

Today I'm releasing the "1000×1000 collection": a unified place to learn about dynamical structure. 1000 simulated time series (1000 samples each) spanning 133 dynamical processes. Have a play? 🐛 #timeseries #dynamicalsystems #complexity #opendata dynamicsandneuralsystems.github.io/1000x1000/

We are thrilled 🥳 to share that we’re joining forces with @neuroprinciplist.bsky.social to establish a joint research unit, @cmc-unit.bsky.social integrating natural and embodied decision making across species! We also have open PhD and postdoc positions (check below for more info) 🎉

CMC Unit@cmc-unit.bsky.social

We, the Natural Decision Making Group and the Embodied Decision Making Group, are joining forces to establish the CMC Unit, a joint research unit to uncover computational, biological, and ecological principles underlying adaptive decision-making. You can read more about us here: cmc-unit.org

Train your model on a task, or fit it to biological data? And once it's optimized, what does it tell us about the brain? 🧠 In our #BernsteinConference satellite workshop, we'll discuss these questions through the lenses of different optimization methods. Check it out in Room 3.104! 🤓😉

I feel like over the past few months (even before the watermarking) AI models have degraded quite a lot when it comes to writing. It’s so much that I stopped using them to fix grammatical errors and all. Am I the only one? Claude specifically is the worst you can identify it in like 3 sentences.

I don’t know how to say but what comes out of these models are not human-like. I watch some videos and even though the person is talking I feel the script is written by Claude. There’s some weirdness to it that gives it away immediately. The sentences are constructed differently whyyy

First person in my bloodline to read this combination of words “Slop Jihad”. I think it’s actually a perfect name for a post-rock band.

WIRED@wired.com

Young supporters of Islamic terror groups like ISIS and al-Qaida are using generative AI tools to create fan edits, cartoons, and memes, according to a new report from the Institute of Strategic Dialogue, as part of a trend the report calls “Slop Jihad.”

The Transmitter @thetransmitter.bsky.social

I fear that placing too much emphasis on a specific interpretation of dimensionality, or treating dimensionality as an end-all quantification of some aspect of neural computation, may lead us down the wrong path, writes @mattperich.bsky.social. #neuroskyence www.thetransmitter.org/neural-dynam...

🚨 8 months after, this paper found its home at Science Advances. We came up with a generative brain network model based on game theory and found that the human brain is suboptimal both in terms of wiring cost and communication efficiency. Here's why: www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

Happy to see this out! @mtschiersch.bsky.social shows PFC hemispheres can flexiblely switch between two different WM storage strategies: redundant vs specialized storage systems👇🏻

Melanie Tschiersch@mtschiersch.bsky.social

7/n But why is this useful? Let's think in terms of hard drives: If you have enough space (below capacity), a redundant backup is useful. However, if you run out of space, you'd prioritize new information over backups. Similarly, it can be useful for hemispheres to flexibly adapt to storage demands!

“Every psychologist who in the future attempts to deal with phenomena such as […] fundamentals of character and who is not acquainted with the observations on encephalitis patients will build on sand.” - Von Economo

Yesterday I got into the deep rabbit hole of Encephalitis Lethargica and now I feel like I’ve wasted my life (as Von Economo said) not knowing about the link between neuropsychiatric issues and infectious diseases. Like, how the hell a girl caught a flu and two days later took all her teeth out????
