Okay, I promised I'd explain my internet saga at some point, and now's as good a time as any. For anyone who doesn't know, since November of 2025, my internet connection which had been stable for years, suddenly became unreliable and would intermittently disconnect whenever I was trying to stream.

My time at Resolution Games is unfortunately coming to a close, so I'm looking for a new role! I'm a Stockholm-based gamedev with 5 years of professional studio experience as a programmer and 15+ freeware game releases (often created solo!) over the past decade. More links & info here: jusiv.me

I love being reminded that the audience really doesn’t give a shit about the developers. Like, forget that one of the most influential studios in our industry was just executed by its publisher, just make sure the product continues on the assembly lines!

First five #TTRPG in the order I played them: 1. Vampire the Masquerade, Revised 2. Dungeons and Dragons 3.0/3.5 3. Call of Cthulhu 4. Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 1st Edition 5. Big Eyes, Small Mouth Honestly it's a miracle I even stayed in the hobby. :D

The whole thing is built around this: people like to talk. People like to tell stories and listen to stories, and listen to big ideas and come up with big ideas, and to communicate with each other about what they liked. If there's nobody on one end of the idea it isn't communication. It's nothing.

Your Sunday summary of the past week in FLASH GORDON, wherein we give you an overview of the many nations of planet Mongo. Come back tomorrow for the first week of our next storyline: THE HEAT. Not to be missed 🔥

Fundamentally what the people pushing LLMs for creative media fail to grasp is that a large group of people don't want media that panders to an audience of one; they want something to connect them to other people.

There is no doubt a lot of game making sucks and we like having tools to make it easier for us. My entire specialty is trying to get a computer to make things in the style of a human that are either infeasible for impractical for a single person to make, but we all approach it with artistic vision

And that's why LLMs will ultimately fail. We want stuff made by people with hopes and dreams and lives that we can all share with other people. We want art. And while it can create content, the LLMs can't create art.

It's why we scoff at the idea that Unity can AI generate an entire game for you and point and laugh at it when the best they can come up with is a single room with crates and drones to shoot in the most generic way possible.

It's why Sweeney's crash out is hilarious to us; he sees an optimisation problem to be solved, we see him trying to justify shitting out games that don't matter and won't sell to an audience that doesn't exist while the rest of us genuinely ENJOY making entertainment products.

Even the worst movie or TV show is something that you will at least get a kick out of riffing over or laughing about over coffee afterwards. Even the most impenetrable of art is something that people will want to spend time discussing and analysing with each other.

Without a shared feeling between audience members or creators, no one cares. And that's the thing that stands out, and that's the thing that's being rejected from things that are prompt engineered for the theoretical average person.

making games so you can hopefully afford to make more games is literally a different industry from grinding up people so number goes up and it is harmful to pretend otherwise regardless of whether or not we share a platform or a binary format

Thing is, if we expect storefronts to let people inform their purchasing decisions with AI disclosures then where does it end? Listing the developer and the publisher? Minimum spec requirements? Age ratings? Controller support? You gotta think this through

Y’know, the “forever gm” meme is kind of annoying. Gming isn’t something I dislike, it is my favorite way to play games. You know what I DO dislike? Being the forever scheduler. The forever planner. The one who’s gotta get the ball rolling every time. I think that’s like half of gm burnout for me

steam should have tipping. it should have tipping. there should be tipping on steam. on steam, you should be able to tip the developer. the tip money should go straight to the developers who worked on the game and not the publishers or valve. they should make it so that on steam, you can give a tip

This whole topic has me remembering a horrible thought experiment I had to do in high school. It's where my mind goes whenever the "No Matter Who" argument gets brought up, because my actions in the moment still frighten me. 🧵

The "politics is like the bus" analogy breaks down if all available buses are headed to the same city block, miles from where we need to be, & suspiciously close to a rendering plant. Your tired & poor scapegoats don't owe you grace. Voting for a lesser evil is still a vote for evil.

Okay. Time for a semi-regular Agile rant ALL of Agile, ALL OF IT, is the following four principles: People are more important than Processes Working is more important than Documented Collaboration is more important than Contracts Responding to Change is more important than Planning Thats ALL of it.

Keith Evans@kaynsd.itch.io

It's what managers use instead of Hours because if everyone quoted their hours most programmers work weeks in JIRA would be: - Thing you're asking me to do in the meeting: 20 minutes - Meeting about this thing you're asking me to do: 2 hours plus catered lunch. - Unaccounted for hours: 38

... then what does a manager do in that situation? Actually facilitate problem pain points and handle the minutiae of getting people what they need and to spot problems in advance and ensure the project's got some direction? Pfft what a concept. Who would make the burndown charts?!

Sidenote: I HAVE had a manager who did the above. Their role was effectively to fight upper management every step of the way throughout a project to get what we needed, keep them aware that the things we were doing were vital, and making the project owner give a shit. Honestly one of my best friends

You'll notice how many of these are actually, genuinely, hostile towards managerial roles. The things I have outlined basically tell middle management, even upper management, to take a fucking hike. Yeah. Yeah that's what Agile would do if people so much as tried to follow it correctly.

Instead everything is masked in cloaks of meetings and story points and stand ups and check ins and slack and JIRA and FUCKING DEADLINES. Because if you genuinely had self managing teams where everyone collaborated and worked with the client to develop software a client wanted...

If your client is confused by what is being done then they are not involved enough in the project. Get them in on the teams call. Get them to visit the office. Have them talk directly to the developer if both want to because a three minute chat is often way better than a four day email chain

If you are working to a fucking deadline you have fucked the fuck right up and should fire anyone who looked at a calendar THE WORK IS DONE WHEN THE CLIENT SAYS YOU DID GOOD AND CHOOSES TO STOP PAYING FOR IT. YOU PUT A SHINY CONTRACT OVER COLLABORATION YOU FOOL.

Everything else; kanban boards, scrummasters, sprints, story points, mad-sad-glad shit sandwich meetings ALL OF IT is facilitated towards those four principles. That you get software done the way the client needs it (not the way they say they want it), and rapidly shift everything to do that

If a sprint planning meeting is being held every week and people are visibly bored or at the end of it have nothing to do that is a Process you are holding higher than the People working on things. Cut it the fuck out.

It's been fun watching @laurakbuzz.bsky.social run through FFXIV. And getting to help her through the end of HW was a blast (even if my healing is atrocious for handling Australian ping :D) So much interesting stuff in her future though. Plot only gets wilder from there.
