What I’ve heard (& read) about WHO, summarized: ✔️ WHO is central, we need it for global health & multilateralism ❓We have no idea & can’t agree on what WHO’s mandate should be ❌ WHO reform so far has been as botched as it can be, incl on staff restructuring & sexual harrassment 1/2

For everyone involved in voting & analysis of the DG race, perhaps these are the only 3 questions we need to focus on? And perhaps they apply to all GHIs and MDBs too…?

I’ve already posted my condolences elsewhere, but resharing here too as Helen was such a source of evidence and great, clear analysis for many of us for so, so many years - also here on Bluesky 🕯️

Meanwhile the epidemic in the DRC is continuing to grow rapidly. There have been more than 9000 cases, about half of them deaths. And while you will hear way more about a single suspected plague case in most outlets, this outbreak is now by far the largest Ebola Outbreak the DRC has ever seen.

I usually agree with whatever Kristof says (with a chuckle or angry ‘hell-yeah!’) and he sometimes agrees with what I ramble 👇

Short blog on the World Health Summit in Berlin - before hopping back on the train back home. www.internationalhealthpolicies.org/blogs/whs-20... WHS 2026: a few quick reflections from Berlin

For everyone with closed-door FOMO at WHS & similar summits: I’ve been at an open session, invitation-only Chatham session & confidential lunch today and all speakers were pre-selected, questions pre-shared and points read… What’s the difference? No idea except to make people feel important 🤷‍♀️

3 candidates were unable to join, but I’d venture into risky territory to say: I’m so not sold on what I’ve heard. Who can keep WHO alive and relevant - and thereby help keep evidence-based health on the political agenda? 😳

A few (personal) takes from what’s being said at this session: 1) Budi Sadikin & Hanan Al Kuwari are clearest: WHO should ‘shrink’ (my summary) back to become science-based norms & standards agency (“let others do things they are better at”) (or perhaps better funded for…?)

2) Gevorg Tamamyan has a very different pitch: delivery and results for people in countries - and being accountable for this. (The how with its current mandate is quite unclear to me…).

Most #globalhealth professionals & organizations work in narrow tunnels. What’s really going on…? 👇

As NGOs continue to debate whether to use the “g”-word this week (ending “ide”), most of the world, politics and media ignore the “G” word fully (ending “aza”). 😶🤐

Killing or injuring healthcare workers, bombing hospitals, and targeting ambulances aren't just "war consequences." They are a collapse of humanity. Under international humanitarian law, patients & healthcare workers are protected along with the hospitals they work in & the ambulances they rely on.

#Kenya has reported a case of #Ebola caused by Bundibugyo virus, in a Kenyan citizen who had been living in #DRC. The patient became ill in DRC & received treatment in several hospitals, then travelled from DRC to Nairobi via Kampala. He died in Nairobi yesterday. My condolences to his loved ones.

afro.who.intKenya confirms first imported Bundibugyo virus disease case; WHO supports control effortsThe Government of Kenya notified WHO of the case in line with the International Health Regulations (2005) on 6 October 2026. Kenya is the fourth country to confirm BVD.

On all channels, I continue to (dumbly but happily) ignore any algorithm rule or tip. Nuts what people & organizations do on social (repost, then like, then save, don’t use 80 words, then…). I rather post and don’t show but stay sane!

For people who inspire, I continue to call or meet in person (if they’re open to it). Social for me is only a door to deeper conversations and real relationship/partnership, not an end in itself. *end

On Insta (I still hate it, but giving it a minimal try), I’ve muted all stories and only (minimally) follow reels. I’ll still have to figure out what content to share myself, it doesn’t yet fit what I do & how I use social to connect…

Coming up… Look forward to seeing many of you in Berlin soon!

Sommer 2026: 16.000 Hitzetote 🥵 alleine in 🇩🇪.
