My Norse mythology sleeve connects me to my ancestors. Some of its symbols have also been appropriated by people whose beliefs I reject, and knowing why I chose them doesn’t make that any easier. karlkoch.me/writing/on-t...

I’m usually looking for something I can remove from an interface. But if a visible Save button explains what a hidden bookmark doesn’t, those few letters are doing useful work. I’ve worked through the interaction here: karlkoch.me/writing/on-w...

As always, the deepest of dives on keyboards. Marcin’s Shift Happens was a wild read, so glad I got it during the Kickstarter.

This might be intense (or, intensely boring), but I wrote down everything I know about differences between Mac and PC keyboards today. It might be useful for people who design cross-platform apps, especially web apps! unsung.aresluna.org/deeper-dive-...

I really agree with Sean Goedecke on reading code. Following how an interface actually works is a big reason I still think design engineers need coding fundamentals, especially when AI is writing the code. karlkoch.me/writing/on-k...

The Design Engineering work that looks best online is usually polish. I want us to show the end-to-end projects and the tools that helped a whole team too, because what we show affects when people think to involve us. karlkoch.me/writing/end-...

I’ve been hiring Design Engineers, and some portfolios make it surprisingly difficult to work out what the person did. The hiring manager is one of your users too; help them understand the work before asking them to explore it. karlkoch.me/writing/the-...

I've learnt a lot from opening my doors to people asking for help. I don't think they should have to pitch what's in it for me first. And if I can't help, I can say so kindly; it doesn't need to be pitchforks at dawn. karlkoch.me/writing/on-k...

If you don’t put proper guardrails on your AI, this is what happens

Just wow. Looks like Zuck really is head-deep inside Trump’s a** now. He really is just another spineless billionaire. Shouldn’t have expected more of him. And won’t ever again.

It’s so sad to see what’s happening with all these skate shoe brands just selling out and pushing out all the skaters who helped grow and keep them relevant. I get they might have been losing money, but damn. People buy shoes to support the rider, or at least they used to…

It began with Jim Henson, child psychologists, PBS, and a Ford Foundation grant to use Jane Jacobs’ The Death and Life of Great American Cities to teach kids and model a diverse and kind community. It ends by getting canceled by Warner Bros and Zaslav. A history of American decline in one story.

I remember getting this and absolutely loving it. Best Christmas present ever back when it first dropped. Such a simple and minimal design, but it encouraged me to listen to songs without knowing what was coming next, so I’d typically avoid skipping them and just bask in the randomness.

If the Zoom rebrand solves anything, it should be saving us the precious minutes when people say “can you see my screeeeen?” still.

Arc is really good. I would pay, idk, something for a yearly sub. I'm sure many more would too. And if they didn't have to hire a team to make feature film quality videos about pivots then maybe that would be enough to sustain one browser product?

Decided to chuck up an actual blue sky from golden hour yesterday as my banner image on here because, y’know, “design”.

You are up to date.
