It's ace week!!! Kembral Thorne, the hero of my Echo Archives series, is a biromantic asexual (like me!), which is super important to me but can get lost in book descriptions with everything else going on (Tired mom MC! Sapphic romance! Time loops! Layered worlds! Murder! Swordfights in ballgowns!)

Happy asexual awareness week! It’s once again time for you to become aware of me and my books. Next week you can go back to forgetting, but this week you legally have to pay attention to me sorry I don’t make the rules 💜🤍🩶🖤

This is such a great essay and fascinating, too. I also repeat the "look to self-pub and indie for ace books" line and am pleasantly surprised that trad is not so very far behind as assumed!

You know, I wrote this essay two days ago. And thanks to the kindness and generosity of @queerspecfic.bsky.social we are no longer at 831 books. We're at 933. Just thought I'd throw that out there this #AceWeek. dovelynnwriter.medium.com/asexuality-a...

Having worked for a bank, I would bend over backward to help people see they were being scammed and get out of it. But idk man, if you're stupid enough to let an AI agent have access to your money, you kinda deserve what happens.

Considering I can count on one hand the number of cars I've seen *actually* stop at stop signs in the past six months, this tracks

Brent Toderian@brenttoderian.bsky.social

“Cyclists are often perceived as recklessly flaunting road laws. A new study challenges this perception. The study found only 5% of cyclists broke road rules while riding on bike infrastructure versus 66% of motorists who broke rules while driving.” Safe bike infrastructure fuels rule-following.

So we had our first player character "die" at Kids' D&D yesterday when one of our two chaos gremlins tried to attack four perfectly friendly NPC guards. Unfortch, I'm not sure they're going to learn from this; am I cool if I start using wisdom saves as hard "no you *wouldn't* do this stupid thing"?

The Woods All Black paperback tour thread!! For the next couple weeks, I'll be at... The "Hops & Horrors" festival hosted by Destihl Beer Hall and Bobzbay Books on 10/25 from 10am-2:30pm, in Bloomington-Normal IL!

10yo has already started asking me to make more costumes so I'm going to put that in the win bucket. And also tell her maybe next year 😬

K.A. Doore@kadoore.com

I spent like 90 hours relearning how to sew and at the end of it, 10yo said "this is the best thing you've ever made" so yeah Worth it

This is your PSA that if you have a kid between the age of 0 and 10 you should check out DON'T TRUST FISH by Neil Sharpson because it fucking slaps

Mixeduppainter@mixeduppainter.bsky.social

A very hearty thank you to @kadoore.com for recommending Don't Trust Fish because it's honestly one of the best books I've read this year 😂

NECROMANCY!! *froths at the mouth*

Saga Press Books@sagapressbooks.bsky.social

👑 COVER REVEAL 👑 Gideon the Ninth meets My Lady Jane in this darkly sumptuous historical fantasy debut of Tudor-inspired court intrigue, necromancy, and deadly ambition.

So we're going through this right now with our kids and it's a little of column A, a little of column B. Yes, kids should learn to be okay with being bored and/or seek out their own projects *and* it's beneficial to be around other kids who are ahead and want to learn more.

Ann Leckie@annleckie.com

"But what do we do with the gifted kids, they'll just sit in class and twiddle their thumbs?" I don't know, I guess it's impossible for them to help their classmates, or work on a project in class that uses their curiosity and also teaches their classmates something. <shrug> Guess we can't!

I have a lot of complicated feelings around the gifted program that I get to dredge up now as a parent, but I do think it's important for kids who learn quickly to be around other kids who do as well; it challenges them to try harder instead of coasting through with minimum effort.

The lots of things in education right now could be improved and the need for that kind of program is inherently tied to the weaknesses and failures of the system. Teachers don't have the time to teach those kids to seek out other projects; but hey, that's what the weekly pull-out was supposed to do.

*perks up* Linguistics??

Arthur H. Manners@arthurmanners.bsky.social

The cover for my debut novel, "Inworld", says everything I'd hoped for and more about what kind of book this is. Astrophysics meets linguistics. Alien megastructures. False gods. Sentient axolotls. A mystery that spans centuries. A race for survival. #SciFi #books #debut #ScienceFiction

The internet as a source of useful information is truly dead/actively dying and I hate it. I used to be able to find helpful tutorials on almost anything, but the last month whenever I try to find a how-to, guide, or tutorial, 99% of the websites are LLM-generated and completely useless.

I don't know what the solution is. Wikihow still seems pretty solid. Tutorials from pre-2022 seem decent. But it's harder to find those amongst sheer tonnage of LLM-generated slop webpages. T_T

For now, I've gone back to bookmarking seemingly reliable websites and starting there instead of using any search. Even DuckDuckGo and Kagi are struggling and giving me LLM-gen sites 3/4 of the time, so it's not just a Google problem. tbf I don't even bother with Google anymore.

It sucks even more because usually I don't know enough about the topic (like, recently, sewing) to know when something is wrong right away. Which is why I'm looking for a guide. So I'll get 1/3 of the way through reading instructions before I notice an LLM tell and realize I've just wasted my time.

Aww heck it, since my essay on failure is making the rounds, wanna see something pretty? Well I'm showing you anyway. If I can figure out how to make various platforms work, they'll be up as as ebooks, wherever fine ebooks are sold on 11/10. (Biiiig if. Wish me luck, lol.)

Ohhhhhhh, Bsky updated profiles, you can add separate links now! *starts adding all the queer sff lists*

I guess they're gonna need to get blood out of me by squeezing me like a rock because three separate phlebotomists certainly couldn't

The real threat is I want to ask for book recs but I know that way lies madness. Physical TBR first, Kai. Baby steps.

I have been reading *so much* in the last 3 months that I finally caught up on all my library holds and now I'm staring at my physical TBR pile and realizing: It's Time

I honestly don't know which to read next. I think I might just arrange them in a circle around me on the floor and spin with my arms out and see where I land?

idk when it happened but somehow in the last year in our household we transitioned from toys covering every available surface to books and I can't even be mad

I know one of us says this basically every day, but if you are an actual podcaster/bookstore/book club organizer... do not use chatGPT to write your pitch. We will delete it. We see 7-371 of them a day and we can spot them by the 5th word. It doesn't matter if you're real. We'll delete it.

Me: What was your favorite thing about the camp-out this weekend? The s'mores? The obstacle course? The campfire? The crafts? Sleeping in a tent? The candy?? 5yo: The baby donkey*! *...that we saw on the drive in 😅

Anyway my 40yo body cannot handle sleeping on the ground like I once could in my 20s so I'll be back in a few days after I recover

I lasted 3 days at a mall job where they wanted me on-call over Thanksgiving weekend and that meant calling every 2-3 hours asking if they needed me to come in. They did not and I got paid $0 to waste an entire day calling. I didn't bother calling the next day or ever again.

But the reason cars are easier and faster is not because cars are INHERENTLY easier and faster as a form of transportation. It is because we have built this place for cars. We can unbuild it, and step ONE in unbuilding it is imagining hard infrastructure that you can build around.

When I first started seeing car infrastructure as the wide, dangerous gulf between Places I Wanted to go - streets, stroads, massive parking lots - it became impossible not to also see how much more walkable our cities would be without them. That mile between home and the store is 1/2 road & parking

This is exactly what the rest of corporate America is doing right now: buying genAI licenses and telling employees to figure out use cases after the fact. There's an overall terror of being left behind if some other company magically discovers a way to use genAI that actually saves time.
