Side benefit of this idea: I can direct prospectives to less established faculty they might not be aware of

Mor Naaman@informor.bsky.social

Show proof that you aren't just spamming. Crazy idea: put on your webpage a list of professors that you contact; no more than 10-15 names. Refer to it in your email. Those names better be in an area close to mine. This is an assessment signal of interest/commitment in me AND the research area.

X's Community Notes are increasingly submitted by AI writers. In a new preprint, X open-sourced its Community Writer tool. A dive into the data underpinning it revealed that in Sept, six AI writers run by X's team wrote 90%+ of all AI-written notes, and 55% of notes that showed up on posts.

Trump renaming things seems profoundly stupid, and it is. It's also a classic strongman move. Turkmenistan's dictator renamed "April" and "bread" after his mother. Mussolini renamed "bar" and "sandwich" to made-up words so people could tell which bars and paninis were fascist. Much like SpaceXSI.

I've heard a lot of sad voices in our community who are "depressed" and "completely crushed" by the new wave of AI results. I'm actually very optimistic. I don't have particularly good rationales, but emotionally speaking, let me try to infect you with a bit of my optimism if you need it. 1/n

In 2023, Change.org integrated an AI-assisted writing tool into their platform. Nihar Shah did a heroic experiment for TMLR: he spent 20-25 hours over two weeks interviewing authors of seemingly low-quality submissions about their own papers. He confirmed what we all suspected: people submitting these papers have *no idea* what is going on in them.

TMLR has faced a deluge of submissions, necessitating stricter desk rejection policies due to limited reviewer capacity Co-EiC Nihar Shah reached out to authors of 10 papers slated for desk reject. Could they answer questions about their *own* submission? medium.com/@TmlrOrg/ask...

An interesting thing is happening to me at the moment. I have a standing bug bounty policy for my first authored scientific work. That means, I've committed to pay people who report bugs in my code, up to 750โ‚ฌ for severe errors. Since GPT-6 Astra came out, I'm now getting several bug reports daily.

Every time.

Do our social media algorithms correctly reflect our values? Our new article published today in @pnas.org shows that the answer is often not, and that the content that gets promoted into their ranked feeds is often actively counter to our values.

This seems to me a big step forward. I recently "finished" a new paper and put it through refine.ink. I thought the resulting 14 page report was as good as any referee report I have ever got back and it appeared in about 20 minutes. I hope all econometrics (and statistics) journals will follow.
