Political media is the only topic other than “small dogs with names inspired by Superman” that I feel like I can honestly refer to myself as an “expert,” and I implore you to stop watching cable news. It doesn’t inform you. TV news is one of the worst ways possible to get the news.

We tried "everyone is entitled to an opinion" for three straight decades and all we have to show for it is four thousand cases of measles and a death cult running the government. It's time for people who don't know what they're talking about to shut the fuck up.

I like how You Can See Everything is priming a lot of discussion about what it means to trust documentaries and how well anyone can really know the truth, but I'm now worried that watching it will taint how I enjoy This Is Spinal Tap.

it's hard to describe to young folks how cool airbnb was when it first launched. just weirdos and spare rooms for like twenty bucks. we stayed at a guy's house in oregon who was a "bear safety expert" and when we asked him what to do if a bear attacked you he replied, completely seriously "i dunno."

Airbnb is banning its hosts from making guests do things like “stripping the bed, taking trash offsite, or washing and putting away dishes.” The hosts....are not taking it well: www.wired.com/story/airbnb...

I have been meaning to write about this for a month or so now but it breaks my heart. AI has infected every hobby. Everything is noise. It's hurting existing communities and trudging through the slop is exhausting.

Every single hobby I love has has been infected by slopped up and unserious software. It's exhausting. aftermath.site/ai-slop-hobbie...

We're restricting horse-drawn carriages faster than we are restricting guns.

In New York City, lawmakers have voted to ban horse-drawn carriage rides in Central Park, months after a teenager died in a fall from one of the carriages in June.

Business Insider confirms it: Amazon has warehouses of GPUs that can’t be installed, and is buying them so far in advance that a supply chain team said they “didn’t have a clear forecasted path” to installing them. www.businessinsider.com/amazon-220-b...

Moby Dick is taking forever for me to read because it is five parts plot and twenty parts explaining what a whale is to people who died a hundred years before Discovery Channel existed.

Or we can tax the hell out of him and fine the hell out of his companies every time they do something wrong.

My child's kindergarten recommended five different apps to keep track of grades and announcements and bus routes and dues. Why.

I won't call Spider-Man: Across the Spider-verse a bad movie, per se, but I will call completely unnecessary and less entertaining than the film before it.

Name a film with a bad, unnecessary sequel.

I finally saw an AI-generated menu in the wild today. The pictures of the food looked so nauseating that I had to leave and find lunch elsewhere. I cannot understand how anyone can look at those pictures and not immediately scrap the whole design.

I think a lot of this has to do with refresh rates and hardware. Pixels and iPhones just respond instantly, so using them is no hassle. But car touch screens, bloated Fire tablets, other cheap hardware... The imprecise touch screen and laggy software become obstacles to usability.

Contrasted with today's Swan Boy, I just last week listened to the Rude Tales of Magic live episode in which the pirate captain Twice-Damned Regina does, in fact, keep receipts.

I posted a joke the other day about how my kid wanted a Mickey song that didn't exist, and a bunch of people were like "just AI to make it." I understand needing to please a toddler, but man--that's just not how I want him to think about music at all. It's not a vending machine.

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

About four songs into the "Most Popular Songs" playlist, ODESZA is fine. Good background music. Certainly miles better than the Chainsmokers or some of the other mid-to-low tier EDM acts that made the charts in the early 2010s.

My friend convinced some of us to buy tickets to see ODESZA live (hence the reason she asked me to listen to them). I've not ever been to an EDM concert, and I hope the appeal of this type of EDM is more apparent live.
