BlueSky? Why, it’s a riot. One says what one fancies & what one does not fancy & often one reads the queerest things! BlueSky: a social medium of which one can be quite fond.

“it’s privileged not to use AI” can’t hurt me, I’ve been hardened against years of “it’s privileged not to drive”

it is so disorienting when alaska political silliness becomes national news. “there are two Dans Sullivan” was supposed to just be something I chuckled at hearing from my mom

one personal thought from elizabeth holmes coming back into attention is: boy am I grateful I did not get admitted to stanford back when I wanted to be

for the most part, the thanksgiving turkey makes itself. the cook really just does a tiny bit at the end

I feel like every time I go to a doctor for some reason they pull out a new doodad and it’s pretty much always great

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I’ve seen multiple takes at this point that scientific papers should be some kind of software or another and… no? obviously no? what are you talking about?

“I made some important findings so I want to make sure they‘ll be completely dependent on a specific confluence of products being continuously maintained by the flightiest industry on Earth.“ ???

it’s so funny seeing the social media dynamics at play for you can see everything. oops, it got too popular and well regarded, so you can feel people instinctively firing up the backlash ovens

nathan fielder’s TV shows never “broke through” so we were allowed to just like them. that sure was nice

I'm at the high school I'm at the gun range I'm at the Issaquah combination high school and gun range

this is not a joke about school shootings; this is a joke about the bizarre fact that Issaquah high has a gun range next door that you can hear from the campus

I support whatever taxes force this dunce to move out of his 5000 square foot mcmansion

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

the more I think about it the less I understand why it’s laughable that he thought the garden of eden was in missouri

I’m an atheist, I don’t believe in any of this stuff, and I imagine indigenous missouri seemed like a lush god-given paradise, so ok, sure

I think people find all the inclusion of america in mormonism weird, but isn’t the alternative just as weird? god made the whole planet and then for a few thousand years just kinda forgot about his entire creation outside of a 500ish mile circle?

finally putting together the pieces on the “life changing money” discourse lol. big “two guys who suck are fighting” hours

if I wanted to look at cool animatronics while uncomfortably avoiding thinking about the famous owner's awful racial and labor politics I would just go to disney

Alex Hern@hern.bsky.social

do think there's a danger of looking at extremely cool shit like a car driving upside down then doing a kickflip before landing, and convincing yourself it's actually lame because the guy funding it is a white supremacist

the nice thing about going to disney is you don't have to delude yourself that "this is the future of yetis" or whatever to enjoy it

You just don't get it. The technology is always improving - pouring river water in your socks is getting easier and faster and cheaper every year.

["guy who lost the keys to his mailbox and his ballots are stuck inside of it" voice] mail-in voting just doesn't work!

went to Chicago for the first time. looked up The Loop on wikipedia. you're never going to believe how local business owners felt about its construction.

technically basically everyone's a degrowther, it's just differences in opinion about which resources are sacrificable

if there's one thing I always hated about listening to music, it's the *checks notes* community and the *looks closer* engaging with new things

just kidding, I've been around tech guys long enough to know they don't actually listen to music, they just want dopamine-generating sounds to inject into their noise-canceling headphones while they type on the loudest keyboards on the planet

men who work in tech are Very Special Boys who require the most exacting conditions, akin to a virology lab or a chip fab, to enter what they call a "flow state", which is when they're able to focus well enough to tell a computer to write some code

I really do think a large contingent of Men in the Tech Industry operate with a near-axiomatic idea that it's good any time a computer does something, and then they retcon some excuse about efficiency or whatever
