Just saw a picture of the shack and I’m thinking about this again

DeLillo writing the shooter living for years in the Unabomber’s shack within the FBI storage facility

I keep trying and failing to find a quote I read many years ago from a vehicle accident investigator. Something like "Given the choice between executing a half g turn and hitting a tree, most people choose to hit the tree."

I called an electrician today and they told me they "were not accepting new clients" this year. Wow. I knew there was a labor shortage in the trades but I thought it was a "wages are a little high" situation not a "finding a therapist in Calabasas" situation.

This is amazing

The Flipbook of the Rings. More than 1000 artists collaborated to create a hand-drawn, shot-for-shot, animated, flipbook version of the first The Lord of the Rings movie. All 3 hours. Over 120,000 scenes drawn by hand. Watch the first 11 minutes here. [kottke.org]

the powerful human brain allows us to do an incredible array of swipes, taps, and even very complex, delicate maneuvers such as the two-finger pinch, which scientists believe allows us to zoom in

One summer in high school I saw a concert at Darien Lake (B-52s and Violent Femmes (!!!)) and part of it included being in the park after hours somehow. Anyway I rode the Predator like 5 times in a row with no lines which you can only safely do at 14.

"are you enjoying duo mobile" does a hamburger enjoy being made of quarks. does a fish enjoy linear time. does the mountain enjoy the first taste of a cup of hot chocolate when you get back to the ski lodge. your question means nothing to me. i couldn't enjoy duo mobile even if i tried

I can tell what time it is because my coworkers' laptops are chiming like churchbells for their upcoming meetings. Ten minutes to the hour. Five minutes to the hour.

I'm finally reading Into Thin Air and my brain is like when I got really into the nurburgring 20 years ago. Just names rattling around. Boukreev. Adenaur Forst. Lhotse. Dottinger Hohe. Gammelgaard. Flugplatz. Ang Dorje. Aremberg. Beidleman. Hatzenbach. Khumbu.

There is a spider running around the floor in my kitchen, and I’m like you’ve gotta get out of here man, they’ll kill you. It’s not safe for you here.

Went full Sheldon Brown mode at lunch while changing an ancient tire on a favorite old bike, wound up repacking the axle bearings in an empty tofu tub ✅✅✅

In a little vacation community and popped on Craigslist to look for something … first page of listings has “Ninja tools” and a crossbow scope. 🤙

The night at a bar in Brooklyn where they played Is It You Girl? by Betty Wright like 5 times in a row. I couldn’t believe how good it was and I was scrambling to remember some part of it for later, then they just kept re playing it. Was better every time.

Do you have any striking moments of hearing a song for the first time? I remember exactly where I was the first time I heard a milli (shitfaced at a college party naturally but I remember everything about it due to the momentousness of experiencing a milli)

Major milestone this week, after 30+ years on the internet I had a creepy stranger offer me money for feet pics. (I carelessly left a transaction for street cart tacos public on Venmo)

A movie where my character, an intellectual, has this mounted on the living room wall of his implausibly large New York apartment

It’s such a drag. Nice to see someone else mad at it though, maybe it will trigger my rarely activated Spite Centers

I thought I had let go of it but I just saw someone posted photos of expansive sunny landscapes to a “liminal spaces” photo group and I’m grinding my enamel again

OK just learned that ALARA is nuclear-regulatory-speak for "as low as reasonably achievable" which is an incredible acronym on like three different axes.

The office has replaced the old "ancient grains" granola with new "kiss my oats" granola. Struggling to muster up a Bad Boy attitude for breakfast at my desk but I'll try.

When I was younger I liked side skirts and all that but then I grew up and now I know you have to Tuck. That. Rocker. In. "When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child" etc.

oh no

I’ve got todos on my mind

I put a reminder on my work calendar for some chores, and even as a non-spanish-speaker there is grim enjoyment in seeing "todos" on the schedule

I don't eat too many packaged foods but I feel a sort of benign wonder towards the trend of creating flavor simulacra experiences on top of existing items, the way a person in the 50s probably felt watching an educational film about Advances in Plastics

Big fan of take your child to work day. All these people on the train, at grand central, on the street, and in the office are full of tender gestures, tender voices. Everyone’s having a Big Day. It’s good.
