Reform plan to bring back imperial measurements to help boost US trade, not realising that US imperial measurements are different from UK ones. So dense a black hole is empty space by comparison.

Imagine being from Britain and accusing the EU of neoliberalism and austerity without even a hint of self-awareness lol.

Gary Foskett@garyfoskett.bsky.social

An economic union? With a stagnating EU that is pursuing neoliberalism and austerity as answers to a growing debt burden? Varoufakis writes & podcasts about this. We can surely have a social reunion and more freedom to trade in farm produce without returning to strict rules, the EU parliament, etc.

The lessons from Brazil and Serbia? Don't concede one inch of ground to the far right. Don't appease. Don't triangulate. Don't grovel. Don't say they have "legitimate concerns". Mobilise your base, and fight them with all the democratic means at your disposal.

The short version is, be careful of discussing what you don't want because that just looks like exceptionalist UK all over again. Which is true, and all the more reason why the absence of pro-EU voices making strong pro-EU arguments is even more striking.

Interesting contrasts. Burnham is lauded for asking if the UK might accept free movement as the price for making money out of the SM. On the other hand, Georgians have been demonstrating every night for 2 years out of a passionate wish to join the EU and have a European future.

The mentality of certain "rejoiners". Trustworthy old Britain, the most trustworthy member state the EU ever had apparently, served on a bed of supremacism. Not fit to be an EU member.

Richard Dubourg@richarddubourg.bsky.social

Did I talk about changing the rules? Are you so naive to think that every MS upholds the rules? One of the things that some of the "bigger" MSs valued with UK membership is that we did enforce the rules, while other MSs would happily accept new rules with no intention of enforcing them.

Muslims and immigrants, despite all the lies we're told about them, have never presented a systemic threat to Western security, let alone to "Western civilisation". Instead, the threats come from our governments, especially in the US, and their grim alliances with capital and overseas dictators.

I have been trying to think of what Trump’s hideous “ballroom” project reminds me of — and I finally have it — it is Nicolai Ceausescu’s infamous and unfinished House of the People in communist Romania, which also brought awfulness to a lovely downtown.

Other than the fact that we have already rejected our previous exceptional terms of membership as not good enough for us, rejected the Eurozone, rejected Schengen and were absolutely against ever closer union, I can’t see any reason why we aren’t the perfect candidate to join

😂It's always all about "them" isn't it. They want "good" terms from the EU so THEY can progress. "Good" terms in their eyes means not participating in the EU's finest achievements like Schengen. More spesjul treatment for a country that only spat us in the face after decades of appeasement.

Rob Blackie@robblackie.bsky.social

2. Explain to EU partners that we can only progress at the speed that we get good terms. 3. Rejoin Single Market - to get most economic benefits right away. 4. Rejoin EU when a) partners are happy to give us a similar deal to before (which is partly dependent on how stable we look),

Spot on, David. Seen from the EU, this approach sounds awfully same old, same old: want to make money and to 'lead'. The EU continues to grow and change, but its foundation is the same. And many of the biggest changes are ones which the UK itself would have blocked--a fact of which Bx is well aware.

The EU is "a system built on what the UK can do for it". Wait till this uneducated "man" hears that the EU's predecessor rejected a UK application to join it several times. My god they are so incredibly thick and arrogant. An "unaccountable" institution he cries from the UK of all places.

Diplomatic Docus. I'm a realist.@liberalrights.bsky.social

No, shame on you. The EU isn't a force for good - it's a system built on what the UK can do for it, not what works for us. Framing anyone who rejects EU overreach as a "Putin puppet" is just a distraction. The real issue is an unaccountable institution that never worked for the majority of the UK.

Where to even begin? The UK never paid its fair share into the EU. Was absent when the Treaty of Rome was signed and only came crawling to the EEC when its "competitor" EFTA turned out to be another huge British failure. Absent from the euro. Absent from Schengen. Absent from the social chapter.

But apparently we are built upon what Britain can do for us. And they don't understand why they get laughed at everywhere they show their haughty faces and belittle the most successful project this continent has ever seen.

Let's give Belgium whatever guarantees it asks for to transfer Russia's frozen assets to Ukraine. Ukraine's and Europe's future depends on it, and we can't allow ourselves to fail just because we didn't dare give guarantees to Belgium

Nothing makes me laugh harder than some English entitlement and pathetic victimhood to brighten up my day. 😂 How dare the French try to reap the benefits of Brexit by using the fact that Britain chose not to be a member of the EU? How dare they!

James Bottomley@jamesbottomley.bsky.social

It's good, but we should be looking at how the French government are behaving, despite Macron's apparent welcoming of Britain back into close relations, behind the scenes we're seeing the old France trying to do us down at every opportunity and only submitting under German pressure. Not good.
