RFK: "There's five hundred million Arabs in the world. And yet they don't produce science. They don't win the Nobel Prize. They don't win the Fields Prize. They don't win the Wolf Prize. They don't produce literature."

academics. You need three filters in your life. 1. Student emails go into a folder. Not because they are hard, but because they are enomously easy and few people are asking for you to open a spreadsheet and you can crank through them being pleasent and chatty.

academics. You need three filters in your life. 1. Student emails go into a folder. Not because they are hard, but because they are enomously easy and few people are asking for you to open a spreadsheet and you can crank through them being pleasent and chatty.

2. Anything with the word 'unsubscribe' in it goes into a folder. Sometimes these are 'you got a message on this platform' but mostly it's things that you can go through and either bulk delete or quickly click on all the 'unsubscribe' links.

So, this is doing numbers, and it’s mostly people correctly getting the ick about a very icky thing. My question is: can you point me at an academic setting that handles this really well? Clear policies? Good training?

As I've said before, it's only once I became a professor that I realized the entmoot, a meeting that goes on for three days and three nights, was a professor's joke about faculty meetings.

Kieran Healy@kjhealy.co

The Lord of the Rings is essentially a series of faculty meetings broken up by several long walks in the countryside.

Bourne Identity is a wonderful film. Tight direction, excellent cast. Had a moment of panic that it’s roughly the same age to my children as Dr No is for me.

Smartphone cameras mean people can't call Black folk liars when we describe how much racism we receive. The cost of solar panels dropped so much that it's obvious that the US government *chooses* to stay on coal and gas, not that it *can't* get off of coal and gas. China planted 66 billion trees.

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

I make an astonishing percenage of my decisions this way.

found out that my mother in law decided she was aggressively pro trans rights literally by going, I don't know anything about this but everyone who is against trans rights is also against free school lunch, the issue I know and care a lot about, so this must be the correct way to feel about this

"Why 42?" is my favourite viva question. I have a place in my heart for those students who answer so instantly and confidently with complete bullshit that I myself doubt the answer. They will go far.

Matteo Lisi@mlisi.bsky.social

Another surprising "seed-42 coincidence" We were reading this: doi.org/10.1057/s415... and noted a mistmatch of data in Fig2 with reported stats (e.g. the SD of x-coordinates for blue crosses cannot be 30 as reported). We extracted the plotted points to investigate... #psychscisky #science

I had to go on Twitter to confirm this was real because Ship Awesome Games In A Weekend having a hand with six fingers was so on the nose I was about to pass out

This shit just writes itself at this point. Just the name "Epic AI MegaJam" is a joke that best describes what is going on with these companies.

i know enshittification discourse is getting boring, but 'has nobody published on this topic or is google scholar just fucked' is a really annoying part of a research process these days

The thing is, I don’t remember any of this - there was a day when nobody thought it was an option, then a literal day when it might happen, then it was irreversibly happening. There wasn’t a persuasion phase.

If you were too young in 2003 here is what Bush told the American people: 1) The Iraq War won’t cost a lot of money 3) We won’t need a lot of troops 4) We’ll bring peace and freedom to Iraq 5) We’ll find WMDs 6) We’ll be welcomed as liberators 7) It will be easy 8) It won’t take long All lies.

Me, about to do a simple Arduino project: “I spent eight years in C++, four of them squeezing every gram of performance out of it, this will be simple” Me, an hour later: “what is this unwieldy bastard language?” _throws header file across the room_ #academicsky

It's backed-up by research! "samples from the United States were less frequently specified in titles" unless "they referred to racial/ethnic/cultural minorities who may be perceived as exceptions to assumed generalizability of the White American population" #AcademicSky doi.org/10.1177/1948...

Editors to underrepresented researchers: Put your country in the title. Global North authors: Don't bother. Everyone else: Cites the US/UK/Australia... study because it *sounds* universal and more generalizable. Result: Underrepresented voices stay invisible. #AcademicSky
