@duckduckgo.com filed an amicus brief yesterday in Google’s absurd appeal that it isn’t a monopoly. We explain how Google’s actions harmed not just competition but also undermined people’s ability to protect their privacy. spreadprivacy.com/google-appea... #antitrust

Facebook's last update on its vaunted App Developer Investigation was in September 2019. I wrote an amicus brief in November 2020 calling into question Facebook's commitment to the ADI. epic.org/wp-content/u...

Today, a judge in New Mexico ordered Meta to pay $25 billion for misleading users on data privacy and a range of other statements that a jury deemed deceptive (and willfully so). Last month I broke down the jury's determinations on each of the questions posed to it:

Why do people in our society constantly feel qualified to pontificate on things they “know nothing about”?

Q: Amy Acton's mother has not cared for her in about 50 years after her step dad was indicted for raping her. Why should anymore listen to what the mother says? TRUMP: Well, I know nothing about it. All I know is the mother said very bad things about Acton. I think you have to take that seriously.

And the AI industry receives sales tax exemptions, property tax abatements, bonus depreciation & preferential tax treatment for investors. If AI takes jobs, the tax base shrinks further: ~3/4 of fed. tax revenue comes from taxes on labor. Now is the time to tax AI.

🧵🧵🧵 The NY Times posted a 15-minute video today in which I got to tell NYT what’s wrong with its coverage. They said they saw my critical posts on Bluesky and invited me to do a video with them to air my grievances. Weird, right? I didn’t hold back. I blasted their sanewashing of MAGA extremism.

Private companies may be building AI almost entirely on their own, but they shouldn’t be shaping the rules. Props to VPA for focusing on the public interest.

News: I’m leading the Vanderbilt Policy Accelerator’s new AI Governance Project! AI is reshaping the econ, work, security & culture, but largely at the direction of private actors. AGP will build policy that centers the public's interest vanderbiltpolicyaccelerator.substack.com/p/announcing...

Fun fact: Tesla went with a giant touchscreen instead of knobs for the Model 3 purely to save time and money. Knobs would have required spinning up a whole supply chain. The company spun it as a luxury feature and much of the industry followed suit. But it was always an inferior substitute.

[car dealership waiting room] Me: [chanting] knobs, knobs- Other car buyers: knobs, KNOBS Car salesman: [pounding desk] KNOBS, KNOBS, KNOBS!

This is appalling on so many levels, but what seems worse to me is that it reflects a profound lack of empath. I always thought Justice Alito a bit of a robot.

Marty Lederman@martylederman.bsky.social

Samuel Alito: We won't overturn Obergefell because it's engendered reliance interests. Jan Crawford: Well, many people had organized their lives around Roe v. Wade. Alito: No, they didn't. Women merely had an "abstract" interest in "ideas about the kind of society that they were going to live in."

Maybe Google will just change it when you look up OpenAI’s office in Maps?

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

SORKIN: I'm half joking -- does OpenAI need to change its name? DNI JAY CLAYTON: Ha ha ha. You know what? Why don't you ask them, Andrew

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: Tell us why the world shouldn't be concerned about AI, why there shouldn't be guardrails? TRUMP: Because we have people that love our country & love the world a lot Q: It requires more than love, doesn't it? T: No. It requires this *points to head* and they're the smartest people in the world

With the US strategic defeat by Iran, what are the long held assumptions that must be revised? "All the foundations of the unipolar world have vanished. " @policytensor sums up what we have learned since February. Hard to disagree with any of them.

Our lawmakers do not want to make laws.

Rick Scott: "With regard to destroying mankind, these companies need to do the right thing on their own. We're not going to get smart enough to regulate them. We're not going to get something done up here."

For @motherjones.com, I looked into how Meta could be using disabled people to promote its Meta glasses to the masses. As one expert told me, “companies have used accessibility...as a Trojan horse for a tool that poses significant privacy and security threats.” www.motherjones.com/politics/202...

motherjones.comIs Meta using disabled people to promote its glasses?AI glasses are a double-edged sword for disabled people, who face unique risks from surveillance.

The amount of ink spilled over the specifications of this damn surveillance glass light is a convenient distraction from the larger ethics of these things.

The backlash to data centers, Flock, Meta glasses, and AI, is loud, animated, bipartisan, and wielding real power. It's the most popular and united political movement in the nation right now, and it's still growing. So of course Silicon Valley is in complete denial.

Google restricted key Android features to its own apps. When the European Commission asked us what we thought about about it, we had plenty to say. And they listened. Alphabet must now open up 11 Android features to third-party assistants. Read more 👇
