A reminder, because it is almost that time of year: More children are killed by cars on Halloween than any other day of the year, by far. www.vox.com/future-perfe... If you're a parent, I hope you'll do what you can to keep kids safe. If you're driving on Saturday, PLEASE exercise extra caution.

We had like four days of injuries not being the defining feature of the NBA season. This past weekend was rough.

Toronto's Kawhi Leonard is expected to miss a period of weeks due to swelling in his left knee, sources tell ESPN. MRI on Leonard's knee showed no structural damage, but sides will use the shorter term to ramp him back up after the stoppages during the offseason.

I probably missed a bunch of discourse, but have we processed that Angela Duckworth basically completely reversed course on the whole grit thing? Whoops!

It’s so strange, I thought You Can See Everything was a masterpiece, so dense, and yet I’ve had zero desire to talk about it or read any analysis or anything. Just kinda sitting with it. 1/2

I caught a talk with Fielder and Oppenheim, they said their goal was simply to recreate the experience they had making the film. They knew they were done editing when there wasn’t anything left that would have added to that cause. I think they succeeded. And I kinda haven’t felt the need for more.

WELKER: Is a vote for you a vote for the Trump agenda? MIKE ROGERS: Um, I'm apologizing. I'm having some difficultly in my earpiece. But is a vote for you? I'm not sure. I'll tell you what a vote for me is. It's a great day for the state of Michigan

"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets." Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.

Really really good. The great NYC podcast that this city has always deserved and weirdly never had. And, if I'm being honest, and a little jealous, the kind of show I've always dreamed of making myself. www.nytimes.com/column/metro...

The thing about Jan Crawford’s “diatribe” and CNN’s “heated” is, we all could see the whole exchange with our own eyes, but it suggests they’ve fucked up a lot of coverage of things we couldn’t see.

Want to better understand why American politics feels like it’s shifting? Join us October 19 at The Howard Theatre as Rev. Dr. William J. Barber II, This Day Podcast, and #TheContext host Alex Lovit connect today’s changes to the moments in history when America’s political coalitions shifted.

Just set a reminder for myself, six months from now, that says “what was the name of the press secretary that lasted six days.” Genuinely curious if I will remember the name Katie Zacharia. I give me a 5% chance. Feel free to play along!

This Day in Labor History: October 16, 1859. John Brown and a group of followers invade the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia (today WV) to start a war and end slavery. Let's talk about this key moment in American labor history!

When Grammy-winning musician Rhiannon Giddens begins playing “Old Corn Liquor,” a traditional Black American folk tune, acclaimed Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man recognizes similarities to Chinese pentatonic music and spontaneously joins in. The joy on their faces says it all.

I’ve been biking in NYC for long enough to say this with relative confidence: Access-A-Ride drivers are the most consistently erratic drivers on the road. Ambulettes in general; I don’t know what it is!

And perfectly to time too. Incredible stuff!

Has anyone experienced as much of Chicago’s late-night musical offerings the past few decades as Claudio Velez? I interviewed 16 musicians, DJs, and nightlife workers about the Tamale Guy’s relationship with Chicago music for this Reader oral history.

Absolutely nails it.

This is thrilling, but I'm guessing it means Lena Dunham is not working on my dream project: a Gus Van Sant-style shot-for-shot remake of THE BIG CHILL starring the GIRLS cast. For the record, here's the casting: LENA DUNHAM / MARY KAY PLACE 1/x

This is ostensibly a conversation about Ravelry & fiber arts influencers — but it's actually a conversation about the freelancification of creative work, the decline of institutions that made that work sustainable, and the hollowing out of the creative economy: www.patreon.com/CultureStudy...

The ICE agent at the center of the shooting in Marble Hill on Thursday is a familiar face to those closely following the Trump administration’s ICE crackdown in NYC. The City Reporter wrote about Brenden Cuni in May. 🧵

I know this very fraught territory, but I think the City Reporter did a really good job here - especially by prioritizing the ways you can try to get a glimpse into a school's culture, which is kinda everything.
