I was thinking about why you can’t get any of the .999… expansions by long dividing two integers and I realized it’s because of a certain (good! Let’s not change it!) conventional aspect of the long division algorithm, which is that when we divide a/b we choose remainders strictly less than b. /

A similar experience when I was a grad student was quite formative for me. Found a paper with seemingly impossible results, emailed authors to request data for reanalysis, got the runaround for months, emailed editor citing both journal and APA policy, got nothing but a "what can ya do? 🤷‍♂️"

This is a great essay by A. Gamburd. Funnily I had been thinking about Schmitt (and in fact, specifically The Leviathan in the State Theory of Thomas Hobbes) and Panofsky in these very contexts; they had become part of my mental vocabulary on how I thought of the situation, but he just deploys it.

what i think is currently up in the AI space since we're having cost arguments again: selling inference is very profitable, but models are improving so fast that there's no time for capex on model training to amortize, so net at this rate they're losing money which is why they want a cartel
