Does anyone have book recs that will not have a wait time on Libby? Please only answer if you’re also an inveterate Libby user and have a sense of what’s available, normally when I ask this people suggest wildly popular books with like ten week waits

This is the exact move my employer did last year, down to completing the sale while the vote was ongoing (they actually delayed the official vote until they knew the sale would go through). Very disappointing, and unnerving to know nothing about the fate of the backlist or indeed the frontlist

BIG NEWS: WE'RE DOING A PODCAST!! Hosted by ME. Which means I get to talk to people about books even more than I already do! The first episode is about SWORD LESBIANS & LADY KNIGHTS and it's with Alix E Harrow, CL Clark, and Tasha Suri and it's SO GOOD!! I can't wait for you all to hear it!

Reactor Magazine@reactorsff.bsky.social

We’re thrilled to announce the launch of our first podcast, Read Receipts, a weekly show about speculative fiction, genre, and nerd culture.

I absolutely love the weird shit that bodies do, if we’re friends and you have extra bones or missing nerves or whatever please tell me. The idea of the normative body is both fake and boring

My sixth cranial nerve never developed and so my left eye can’t look left. It is very much a congenital birth defect! But it has the sometimes useful side effect of making me able to see stereogram images instantly, or overlap the images in each eye to find differences between similar images

The one time I worked clothing retail I lasted like a week and it was solely because the single album allowed by corporate was playing in my head every second of every day even when I wasn’t at work and I thought I was going to lose my mind

There’s been a lot of discourse recently about how book editors don’t have time to work on books, want books to arrive to them fully edited, and are pressured to use AI on them once they do. But you know who can polish your MS/proposal and never uses AI? This guy

Did you know you’re allowed to make new movies. You actually don’t have to remake an old movie but opposite for some reason

8 years of All You Can Ever Know 💙🌿 I treasure the conversations I’ve had (& still get to have) because of this book, and continue to be grateful to everyone who’s read it or shared it with others.

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

Yes that’s right, what makes you the Chosen One is your score on a test where <checks notes> you say what words are like other words

Here is Eliezer Yudkowsky explaining (like a very normal person who absolutely does not have some kind of acute personality disorder) why, on the basis of his childhood test scores, he is a special genius uniquely qualified to change the world: web.archive.org/web/20010309...

Bring my whole self to work? Buddy, I don’t bring my whole self ANYWHERE. Have you seen that guy?

You guys ever like a book so much that 10% of the way through you’re already mad you’ll eventually finish it? Because I’m having that experience with Exit Party

I think we all know that iced coffee will be a total outrage for anyone they want to say “doesn’t fit the culture” and not a big deal for anyone else

I just read Daniel Mendelsohn’s “An Odyssey” and I thought it was a pretty remarkable memoir but it’s a lot harder and more confusing to recommend to people after the publication of Daniel Mendelsohn’s “THE Odyssey”

they are going to come for your contraception, it is literally only a matter of time. I just replaced my IUD and if you think any of the long-term methods of contraception would be a good fit for you and/or your partner, now is the time to do it

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

MURRAY: The Trump admin falsely labeled birth control as abortion. Do you agree that an IUD is an abortifacient? OVERTON: If confirmed, I'll be fully briefed M: That's not an answer. The prospect of an FDA commissioner who doesn't know that birth control isn't an abortion is deeply alarming O: 😊

We got a baby camera so we can check on the dog in her crate (she sleeps in the other room and sometimes has Night Digestion) and I’ve started calling it the Pupnapticon

Bake Off had an older guy who was one of several making lemon cake and they described him as “bringing something extra to the lemon party,” we’ve blown right past “soggy bottoms” lads

Great now people can get progressively worse at self-regulation just like they get worse at all the other cognitive tasks they outsource to robots

If you want to judge people for moving to your city wrong you should have been born in DC

Gremliny Nussboo@emilynussbaum.bsky.social

I truly don’t understand this “transplant” nonsense. The whole THING about NYC is that ppl come here from other places to mutate into New Yorkers! TO SEE IF THEY CAN BE KING OF THE HILL, TOP OF THE HEAP! Imho a rando who moved here a year ago is the MOST NY person. Welcome Ohio rando, have a bagel

I came across this when I was at the Kennedy Center protest on Friday, and however ugly you think it looks online, it's even uglier in person

Mark Harris@markharris.bsky.social

Also, he purged the Kennedy Center of a collection of African art that was given in tribute to JFK, but he installed this, from the Tony Montana Meets Saddam Hussein Collection.

I was so confused by this until I remembered I only watch panel shows (where “Christmas special” just means “everyone has a sweater”)

My biggest lost cause in copy editing is trying to get people to stop saying “global pandemic.” They’re global by definition! That’s what the “pan” means!
