Federal funding for science ensures that scientific agendas respond to the wants and needs of scientists and the public. We do not want to live in a society where the scientific agenda is set by a handful of billionaires.

It’s time to have a serious conversation about this shift in philanthropic dollars to fund science, in the broader context of the Trump administration’s war on science as a public good. Thank you to @heidiledford.bsky.social for covering this. MY HOT TAKES 🧵 www.nature.com/articles/d41...

Bottom line: scientific knowledge ought to be understood as a PUBLIC GOOD and treated it as such!! Let’s not (re)privatize science!

The Ethicist | As part of a feud with my neighbor, I reported her Guatamalan gardener to ICE. I've since learned they shipped him to Central African Republic—not what I'd intended. Given my anguish, can I now claim my Pomeranian as an emotional support dog that can sit with me in First Class?

attracting media attention with "stunts" was literally the entire core of the civil rights movement. visuals of cops and other officials harassing, beating, killing organizers was pivotal. the civil rights movement would have gone wild for selfies and tweets.

"The Jews who went to Mississippi didn't take selfies and post tweets." Okay, but honestly, if tweets had been a thing in 1961, many of them probably would have done.

After controversy and national headlines, the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation walked away from a $29.9 million ICE contract. Reflecting on the decision, Tribal Chairman Rupnick said “Indian reservations were the United States government's first attempt at a detention center."

Companies like Anthropic and OpenAI are under scrutiny for copyright and human rights violations, unjust labor practices, unsustainable energy and water use, and the deployment of AI hacking systems. Can an academic use such a tool without breaching the Transparency and Responsibility principles?

This means that when a university recommends a GenAI tool or even licenses it to their researchers or students (aspiring researchers), they need to show that the tool does not infringe on academic integrity principles by design. Will tools like ChatGPT and Claude pass that test? ⬇️

I’m sorry to have to be the bad guy here but we need to recognize that we live in a compressed air thrusters world now. If you’re not finding ways to teach the critical use of compressed air thrusters in your classroom, you’re setting your students up to fail when you could be setting them up to fly
