“Dublin Bay has a long list of protections: it’s an Unesco biosphere, much of it protected under EU law for its birds & habitats. But if our dogs are allowed to run rampant, what’s the point?” Ella McSweeney on Ireland’s problematic relationship with wildlife. www.irishtimes.com/life-style/2...

ADHD isn't lazy — it's twice the effort 🧠💚 People see the unfinished task, not the starting, stopping and restarting behind it. You're not lazy. You're running on hard mode. #adhdtok #ADHDAwarenessMonth #adhdawareness #adhdlife #neurodivergent #mentalhealthmatters

It's that time again 🪶

It's Weird Duck Time again! I made this comic a few years ago, and I was unsure if anyone else felt like winter was best characterized as the time of the weird ducks. The term has caught on and I've heard people using it without knowing where it's from, which is the highest possible honor.

Sieves are in the top three but at least they don't cut you then tip cold water on you when you take them off the drainer.

Things I find deeply aggravating to wash up: an irregular series 1.) Pan lids Awkward to handle, never stand up or stack on the drainer, always have a bit of water left no matter how long you leave them. Often found at the bottom of the sink when you think you've finished, ruining the moment.

No lurgy yet, maybe I've got lucky and the aches are just my existential dread manifesting physically.

The 11yo has been sniffling for two days and I just started unexpectedly aching for no good reason. Really looking forward to waking up tomoz.

Here's what they don't tell you about woodpecker tongues: Some of them are barbed (pileated & downy 'peckers) to allow them to spear insects. The barbs are keratinized, so *hard*. Meaning woodpecker *threat displays* can involve poking an interloper with a barbed tongue. (📷: u/ElvisIsNotDjed)

Today is World Migratory Bird Day. Please say hello to the Pfeilstorch (‘arrow stork’). In 1822 this bird was shot in the German village of Klütz. It already had a 30-inch arrow in its neck. The arrow was made of African wood, and this bird played a pivotal role in our understanding of migration.

Jay update - my acorn supply is now very low - the only ones I have been able to obtain are from the Waitrose car park - there are none whatsoever in the Dorset/Wilts woodlands. I found a few under an American Oak but these are mostly rejected. Sweet Chestnuts & smaller conkers are taken readily.

A sketch of crows for the birdtober day 5 prompt, intelligent. I love crows… I’ve been wanting to draw a roost of crows since we had one gather around our house… so amazing and almost scary. Super cool :) #Birdtoberclub #BirdArt #SciArt #birdtober #wildlifeArt #birds

90 years ago, on the 4th of October 1936, antifascist counter protesters stopped a British Union of Fascists march through London’s East End. The Metropolitan Police tried to clear the way for the fascists resulting in violent clashes known as the Battle of Cable Street. #otd #history 🗃️
