Yesterday, the CSSWG accepted my proposal for mesh gradients and diffusion curve gradients! Want to make gradients like this natively in CSS? Well, we've started the work on it. It's coming! Here's the Explainer: github.com/w3c/csswg-dr...

I can't play an instrument, so I figured out music theory in JavaScript instead. I now understand why there are 12 notes and why notes in the same key sound good 🎶 I've written up my findings with code examples you can run and hear.

To anyone who does not live in Paris but visits the city at regular intervals (as I do), the transformation has been staggering: Paris has been reclaimed from cars. It can be done, and could be done in London too. It is all about political will and taking the risk of being unpopular - for a while.

“Paris has embarked on a grand transformation, planting 155k trees, adding hundreds of kms of bike lanes, pedestrianising 300 school streets and banning cars from the banks of the Seine. Parking has been turned into green space…Fewer parents fear their child being run over when they walk to school.”

The 5 Simpsons lines I’ve uttered most off the top of my head: 1. Am I so out of touch? No, it's the children that are wrong. 2. To alcohol! The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems 3. Mind if I tag along... I'm a bit of a crime buff 4. I am so smart. SMRT. 5. Cowabunga, dude.

Nice mental model for React architecture: start with plain props, graduate to compound components, composers/providers, then lifted state - but only when each solves a real problem. Avoid abstractions until they’ve earned their place. backstage.orus.eu/react-compos...

Rock Against Racism began in 1976 as a reaction to a bunch of racist commentary by Eric Clapton. It's 50 years later and people in tech are still saying similar things. Is it time for a Tech Against Racism movement? We could put on some conferences, some gigs, organise to make it unacceptable.

I have a vague worry that, as we put more and more computation into CSS, web devs are going to end up with performance issues that are difficult to trace to their source compared to JS solutions. The answer is to surface this in DevTools I guess.

✨ Have you ever wondered whether JavaScript animation libraries like GSAP or Motion are as performant as raw CSS transitions/keyframes? The answer is surprisingly nuanced. We dig into the question in my brand-new blog post:
