Can we use vomit as a time machine? Snow petrel stomach oil piles up at nests for millennia, recording Antarctica's past, but only if we know what birds eat today. Our new paper led by @zhongxuanli.bsky.social provides a key step to reading those archives doi.org/10.3354/meps... #OceanSky 🦑🦉🌊🧪

None of this is possible without researchers sharing their data. Decades of tracking studies across dozens of countries give a picture no single study could.

As countries decide where the first High Seas protected areas should go, these maps can help put them in the right places. Let's target protection where the evidence points, not where it's politically convenient. Delighted to have contributed to this study. #OA paper here: doi.org/10.1111/con4...

doi.orgHighly Mobile Seabirds Reveal Areas of Conservation Importance Across the Atlantic OceanCountries have committed to expanding the marine protected area (MPA) network to 30% of the world's ocean by 2030, more than tripling current coverage, and focusing on areas important for biodiversit....

Seabirds travel thousands of km in search of food, revealing where the ocean is most productive. Pooling 13,000+ tracks from 100+ researchers, Marie mapped where they go through the year. A well-placed network protecting 30% of the Atlantic could cover nearly 70% of the places they use.

A female Western Gull was recorded riding 150km in a garbage truck from San Francisco to a compost facility in Central CA, probably to forage. TWICE. An innovator, an icon, a genius. This is one of my favorite @waterbirdsociety.bsky.social papers I've ever handled as managing editor #ornithology

Why Spring Is Critical for Harp Seal Pups ❄️ Harp seal pups are weaned just 10-12 days after birth. By spring, they must adapt fast as sea ice melts. As the Arctic warms, ice breaks up earlier, threatening pup survival and disrupting the marine food web. 🔗 Learn more: tinyurl.com/yfw63d7c

Finally on my way home from Lord Howe Island (albeit slightly delayed). It was a pretty difficult year. Lots of birds with lots of plastic - more than I think we've ever seen. We keep saying "SURELY it can't get much worse" and then somehow it does.

For decades, this iconic graph has provided clear observational evidence of one of the key indicators of global climate change - Arctic sea ice loss. It’s from the NSIDC "Sea Ice Index" Now, support of this crucial data is at risk. A visual lens to our changing poles (zacklabe.com/arctic-sea-i...).

This time of year trends in sea ice concentration are confined to the very outer edges of the #Arctic Ocean. Losses of concentration are smallest in March and April (around the annual maximum). Sea ice concentration = fraction of ice-cover (observed by satellite). More info: doi.org/10.1175/BAMS...
