Researchers on restrictive visas certainly depress the collective bargaining power of grad students and postdocs, leading to lower wages and worse benefits. But somehow I don't think Vance is arguing for open borders and stronger unions.

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Vance: "Some of America's most elite universities bring in foreigners to undercut wages of American residents. There are 9 universities in particular we believe merit an investigation. Those are Harvard, Yale, Stanford, Brown, the University of Pittsburg, UC Davis, Cal Tech, Arizona State, and MIT."

trick question: scientific journals are inherently a scam

Zach Weinersmith@zachweinersmith.bsky.social

If you had an AI that could competently check scientific papers for problems, what would you guess is the rate of the following [assume non-scam scientific journals]: 1) outright fraud 2) incorrect use of stats 3) errors that overturn conclusion 4) claiming sources say stuff they don't say

Last time Trump mailed out a ton of cash he was already on his way to losing 2020. The resulting inflationary spike completely torched the Democrats' chances in 2024. Pretty funny for him to try it again with even more money, two years before the next election.

A good point that applies just as well to any closed-source search engine...

Outsourcing the searches to generative AI is akin to asking a stranger whose political views you don't know to do searches for you and hoping for the best. So, it cannot be the only way to discover information.

My father, a baggage handler at SeaTac Airport, bought our family home in 1971 for $15,000. Today, that very same house would cost $526,000. Hedge funds and wealthy corporations continue to buy up single-family homes, kicking working-class Americans out of the housing market.
