Astonishing quote from Varmus about public money "limiting activities" relative to donor money, when the entire premise of private money is that they control the research agenda and in many cases own the outputs.
Money from the world’s increasingly prosperous technology entrepreneurs has been flooding into biomedical research. Is it changing how science is done? go.nature.com/48by3ha

looking at all the basic social and familial relationships that weird paid losers are telling us they delight in using chatbots for, and — if you believe them, anyway — I guess I’d say you can forget about reading and writing, because simply interacting with human beings is going to be a niche skill

i am inviting anyone from a legacy media organization to explain to me why the house judiciary dems report on trump’s epstein’s ties and multiple allegations of rape isn’t worthy of extensively reporting on. i’m serious. i want to understand.

if we’ve made the process of creating and codifying scientific knowledge so onerous that we outsource it completely to a rock we tricked into thinking, perhaps we need to start doing and codifying science differently.
How can AI support researchers in peer review? Springer Nature and Google DeepMind are partnering to co-design an AI peer review assistant that helps reviewers navigate manuscripts and focus on where their scientific judgement matters most. Learn more: spklr.io/63320EVgT8

Over 2,000 alumni from Vivek’s all-boys catholic high school in Cincinnati have signed and circulated a petition demanding that he pull the ad and issue a public apology for “ignoring the moral responsibilities” of his Jesuit education. I think he’s pretty cooked.
chat I don’t think doubling down on this ad is working out real well for vivek

"hypocrisy is a virtue to fascists, because the point of being in the dominant in-group is that you dominate, and holding others to standards from which you excuse yourself demonstrates domination like little else can"
Today I wrote about Abdul El Sayed's encounter with a Christian fascist named "Tommy," and the fine art of digging up the shameful things fascists bury under their accusations, exposing them for what they are, and then burying their lies in the hole left behind. www.the-reframe.com/taking-our-c...

In multiple instances, the Mississippi Free Press found that information listed in the statewide elections database was incorrect, including erroneous polling place addresses. That can cause voters who use the state's polling place locator tool to go to the wrong location on Election Day.

In Serbia, MAGA influencers from the US were dispatched to Serbia to whip up enthusiasm for the hard-right Alexsandar Vucic who had held power for 12 years. They failed too and the students' movement won.

We must expect that Meta's interference is happening in other elections around the world *right now*. This isn't just a one-off. Meta has proved repeatedly they are committed to advancing far-right agendas worldwide, are serial liars, and are flagrantly indifferent to the dismantling of democracies.

It's time for other people to start investing too. I know I'm asking for a lot, but this isn't about me, it's about LUSID being strong enough to stand on it's own. Please help build the kit, because we aren't using mine anymore. I am invested. Your turn. 🧡 Taryn www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/...

The elite hate us being educated, us educating you, you educating each other, and you having time to do this. Stop granting that it's the university that is elitist inherently: it's been made that way for a reason. Some more points below also on the marriages between patriarchy, AI, capitalism...

In 2005, Time Magazine did a cover story on “The Battle Over Gay Teens.” It’s the same handwringing we see now from “concerned” adults on behalf of young people. “Kids are disclosing their homosexuality with unprecedented regularity–and they are doing so much younger.” time.com/archive/6596...
Josh Turek of Iowa, Democrat, comes out with one of the worst anti-trans ads yet. Not only is it an anti-sports ad, it proposes a ban on federal funding for gender affirming care. That would hit all medicaid and medicare patients, and any ACA federally-subsidized plans as well. Horrific.

History doesn't reset the day after Trump. It's not automatic back to normal, yay democracy won. We will still have a republic that is gravely wounded and bleeding out. Defeating the current assailant doesn't mean you've stopped the bleeding. The wounds are still there and still potentially fatal.

That it'll fail because they lack sufficient consolidation and centralized control does not make it trivial that the president of the United States is trying to steal elections and produce an illegitimate sham Congress. It is open rebellion against the Constitution and morally tantamount to treason.
