I have pretty negative opinions of AI “art”, but I suspect a lot of pushback in and ABOUT the arts comes from the decreasing cost/increasing availability of entertainment, and the long many-factor slide from art to “content” that just needs to stave off seconds of boredom.

I say this because underfunding the arts and artists, and the greater cultural distraction-consumption problem are going to keep driving this to a terrible place regardless of tech pushback, if they stay unsolved.

I’ve seen a few takes that really skilled artists doing something really unique should have basically infinite funding to focus on their craft + execution, and I just want to say: yes.

“For as little as pennies and no artistic process, you can create a vaguely art-shaped thing” is not a new technology problem. Tech just pushes the unit economics even more, when previously people had to half-ass themselves or pay dimes to produce vaguely art and entertainment shaped things.

Californians, please talk to everyone you know about the insurance commissioner race! Many folks don’t know who to vote for, since both candidates are Dems. And plenty of people don’t understand that Jane Kim’s proposal would incentivize high fire risk & have urban folks subsidize high risk areas.

$100 donated to my campaign breaks down roughly as follows: $45 printing (across all printing: door hangers, palm cards, lawn signs) $35 postage (I mailed 19,800 people!) $9 snacks for volunteers $7 web hosting, bank fees, other administrative $4 actblue fees No paid staff. Just infinite gratitude.

Alfred Twu@alfredtwu.com

If you want your campaign contributions used efficiently, the best way to do it is to go to the candidate's website and donate directly. Donating to state and local candidates is also more efficient as we do a lot of the administrative stuff ourselves, or have volunteers doing it.

it's not the only problem in the world but it seems very clear to me that better ADHD support leads to better real-world outcomes, and that the delta between outcomes for the well-supported and unsupported is frequently enormous

Today 33 East Bay elected officials called on AC Transit Board to censure Director Joel Young for substantiated gender-based harassment. AC Transit faces challenges that require a rider focus. That's not possible while Young's misconduct goes unaddressed. Letter: drive.google.com/file/d/1CUpO...

I'm not doing a voter guide, but here are some CA state votes that I think deserve your attention: * Insurance Commissioner: Vote Ben Allen. Kim's plan would suck even more money out of cities to pay for houses that never should have been built in fire-prone areas. It's decidedly not socialist.

BART just set a new ridership record! We carried 254,248 trips yesterday. That’s our highest ridership day since the pandemic, a record we have been breaking again and again this year as more people want to take transit. Thread ⬇️

Also, Young is bad at being a Board Member. During the budget debate, he said nothing. During the discussion on falling reliability, he said nothing. These are their biggest concerns and he’s checked out. Why even be here? Vote @valencia4actransit.bsky.social

This kind of penny-wise, pound-foolish thinking drives me batty. Employees work in tasks done, not characters output. If you give them worse tools, you will get less done and/or spend more getting it done.

Dare Obasanjo@carnage4life.bsky.social

Only 11% of companies could accurately forecast their AI spending. A separate study found cheaper AI models cost more 32% of the time. So dollars per token is less relevant than dollars per task. AI is like getting a contractor, you know the hourly rate but not how many hours the job will take.

I have A LOT more to say about this, but I think it's most important to recognize that Joel Young is a tall pole in the tent of the AC Transit culture of steady decline. Most people in management, and Young and his allies on the Board will tell you that ACT is a system of last resort. 1/x

I'm still a big believer in Kubernetes, but 2026's security environment really stresses foundational decisions that made Kubernetes and the ecosystem appealing to use/build on. A single cluster is WAY too permeable of a security boundary in 2026 if any running container/VM gets compromised.

I think a lot of of this could be fixed with kubelet/CNI/etc node level changes that make node groups a much sharper security boundary, and conventions + tooling that is much more strict about escalation paths. E.g. you should not be able to accidentally run Flux on the same node as webservers.

I've done this rant about 50 times at this point. But here's the TL;DR: Buses are good. Buses are eco-friendly. Low emissions buses are good. Electric buses are also good, if they work reliably and you have the money to deploy them. They are not *nessesary* and shouldn't be prioritized.

It’s tough to position myself as a go-to design reviewer, because very very often my review is “I disagree with the shape of the solution“, or worse, “this problem does not exist”. *drags on a cigarette* It’s all incentives, you see.

There’s a fine line to walk between upholding “if it gets past me it’s probably worth doing” and the fact that many people are often already functionally committed to doing the thing.

This day felt like a tipping point in a long, drawn out, and uneven apocalypse. It profoundly changed my urgency on long-term climate impact. We have had many better days since. But this is where we are going.
