social media is a reminder that the choice has always been introversion or misanthropy. only with peephole to the stupid human tricks in your pocket 24/7, it’s hard even for introverts to choose sufficient isolation.

I don't think I ever watched an episode of Star Trek (science fiction isn't my thing), but I thought casting a Russian while the Cold War was still raging, to make the point that humans would get along better in the future, was a lovely touch.

When people experience nothing but personalist politics, their political imagination atrophies. Israelis vote for the party whose head they want as PM, and don't notice that they have no political apparatus to get things done. So they get despondent and turn inward, away from political engagement.

I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

I haven’t slept a full night in three weeks ahead of the polls opening in Brazil today. I might be shouting into a void here, but if you can spare a few seconds to send good energy towards our elections today and for the largest country in South America to beat fascism, please do so. 🇧🇷

We are watching a coup d’état attempt unfold in real time in Brazil. I’m consumed by desperation.

i am an awesomist, which means i believe in things that are awesome and all the things that awesome people believe. you, of course, are free to disagree with me.

If anyone in Brazil needs help making a decision, you can’t seriously elect anyone on this continent as president who takes their orientation from the current US, which is in the process of very successfully ruining itself.

I'm thrilled to be launching Econvitals today. It's been the main way in which I have been tracking and understanding the economy over the last several months. And I decided I might as well share it with all of you--for free. Has a combo of website, email lists & social media.

For the technocrat, "the business of politics is, at best, a kind of antipolitics: placating and distracting the masses sufficiently well to keep them away from any of the actual levers of power."

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

With AI, fixating on apocalyptic scenarios ignores real-world problems involving the actually already existing AI. We have proven methods to address disruptive technology, but for anyone who opposes them, apocalyptic fantasies can be a useful distraction. My latest, in @liberalcurrents.com:

one way to look at it is the enterprise is contaminated by its history and must be undone. rebuilt from purer roots. another way to look at it is all that misery should not have been endured in vain.

The Monkey's Paw bit here is that the Treasury Secretary my end up being right about the future direction of both USDJPY and US Treasury duration, but the reason for his being right about both things is a significant US tech/equity correction.

If the Democrats take Congress, they should pass amazing, sweeping, exciting bills for Trump to veto. They can nuke the filibuster, just to pass bills that Trump will veto, for which they'll lack a veto-proof majority.

You see a lot of comparisons to Trump's dismal approval now and Truman's in 1946, which lead to a midterm electoral rout. But the resulting do-nothing Congress gave him back the presidency in 1948.

the chart Krugman republishes gives a quite different spin than the widely cited www.federalreserve.gov/publications... even before the recent turn. you can reconcile them, if you call roughly half the population “okay 🤷‍♂️”, but it doesn’t look so great.
