😍 #30DayChartChallenge 2026 Edition In 2026, coding is the same. It would be ridiculous to pretend that LLMs are not better than me at coding, or at least faster. So, this year I decided to participate in the challenge with most of the heavy-lifting done by AI helpers. 🔗 github.com/ikashnitsky/...

@marekj.bsky.social: Housing supply is very inelastic, and the political toolbox is very demand-biased. Be wary of creating a game of musical chairs! Helping one disadvantaged group in the housing market pushes out some other group 😬

Discussion is again diverse and rich from Thomas Jørgensen and Kristoffer Lundberg & Åsa Hansson — covering model, design choices, and Nordic comparisons

Lina Alden focuses on disparities in *male* fertility, an often underexplored dimension of fertility, and discusses how the are shaped by income inequalities 👨‍🍼

The next session features the talk of Mikko Silliman in which he explores the exciting apparent link between accelerated urbanization and decline in fertility 🏙️ In the graph, a counterfactual analysis exercise that estimates urbanization to be responsible for ~1/3 of the fertility decline

Looking at Danish fertility decline, we can also see that the largest driver is declining 1st parity fertility, which is strongly stratified by SES status, education in this image 👀

Imagine, news about changes in organization of science that — surprise, surprise — don't lead to enshitificaton of academia 🙃 How about 15 years of funding for young researchers? 😍 #OpenScience #AcademicSky #ResearchEvaluation

Evaluation of the running projects is another challenge. If I were to set priorities, I'd focus on evaluating only the success of young team members without evaluating the PIs. Young researchers flourish in vibrant projects. And we want to see the spillover effect of job stability for the PIs 💡

I believe that one can well evaluate a scientific project just by looking at the academic trajectories of the younger project members. A caring mentor is likely a good researcher too 🫂 At least that's my consistent observation. What do you think? #ResearchEvaluation

This program can really fix JOB INSECURITY, which is the main enemy of young people in academia (of course, I'm likely biased here, having lost this battle myself 🙈)

Here's definitely something that ERC and other scientific funds should bring to their playbooks ✍️ Of course, there are some elements of the idea that need careful reflection. Maybe the age cutoff at 35 is too restrictive 🤔

The idea is that young talented scientists up to 35yo get funded for 5 years with a straightforward transition to 5 more years of funding (with doubling budget) and afterwards yet again 5 years of funding (with yet again doubling funding). So essentially a career settling deal — 15 years of funding✨

One of the main Danish life concepts is hygge — cozy, warm, cute time in the next company. A Saturday morning in a creative cafe with daughters is an embodiment of this idea 😍

Yesterday was probably my most intense ever running day so far — a personal best in the morning 🏆 and accommodating my 7yo Anna at kids Hans Christian Andersen mini-marathon in the afternoon 🤗

This is and impressive and alarming figure. And I'm sure Nature journals, with their normalization of absurd APCs, are to blame here #OpenScience #AcademicSky #ScientificPublishing

10 years (😱) since my first proper academic paper. That was a tough yet very educational journey; and it's so much easier to deal with the complex and frustrating academic publishing process when the paper in question is a side-kick project, not *the PhD idea* 🙃 🔗 doi.org/10.1016/j.ci...

R version 4.6.0 "Because it was There" (source version) has been released. It should be on CRAN by now. #rstats The choice of codename is in remembrance of R Core member Tomàš Kalibera (1978-2026). Among many other things, he was a keen mountain climber.

This is quite unbelievable 😱 China has been unrolling 10k km of high-speed railway every 4 years since 2008 🚀
