Note to my colleagues in the media: Please ignore the quotidian horror of those who are struck by, maimed and killed by car drivers, but instead please bang on about cyclists on Oxford Street. That seems a way better story. Oh, and look what happens to children in America on Halloween.

The IPCC is pretty clear that if we want a safe climate there can be no new oil and gas. But every country thinks it has some special reason for why it should be the exception

absolutely hate framing like this it's not a blow to "climate campaigners" in the way that a loss by a football team is a blow to their fans it's a blow to everyone who relies on a stable climate, breathable air and drinkable water climate chaos is a physical fact, it's not an issue of opinion

IT'S OUT. Our book on 'Ecologies of security: Everyday disorder in a climate-changed world' is published this week by @brisunipress.bsky.social (our = Richard Sparks, @egirling.bsky.social, Ben Bradford and me). The book is free and open access bristoluniversitypressdigital.com/monobook-oa/... 1/6

Totally - and that story must be : i) legal e-bikes are a large and beneficial part of the future of mobility; ii) so too are e-motorbikes (once they are registered, and treated as motorbikes, we should welcome them); iii) the current 'problems' take place in an environment created by and for cars.

Today the far-right pushes a politics of security that drives a wedge between protection of places and protecting the planet. What we present, instead, is an alternate story about the condition of England, the mundane troubles that afflict people nowadays, and their hopes for addressing them. 5/6

We studied this town back in the mid-1990s and wrote a book about the relation between local crime-talk and sense of place. Read together, these two books tell a story about the changing landscapes of local disorder in England, set against the changing contours of British society and politics. 6/6

The book draws on nearly four years of research in the town of Macclesfield in northern England and shows how experiences of local disorder have been - and we argue, need to be - re-framed under conditions of durable austerity and climate breakdown. 3/6

Today, worries about disorder focus on criminal and non-criminal harms to local and wider environments coupled with anxiety that the basic tasks of urban governance - of creating safe dwelling places - are being neglected. We need, in response, to think ecologically about public safety. 4/6

Yes enforcement. But there are a whole series of car-related offences for which there needs to be consequences not standard criminal justice/penal responses. This is a case in point. It should be met with licence suspension and asset forfeiture.

"An investigation uncovered more than 130 official suppliers in the UK willing to sell cloned number plates" This is such a clear example of where the UK is good at creating laws, and often terrible at enforcing them. Laws are pointless if they're not implemented and *seen* to be implemented.

Our local paper is known as the Oxford Fail, the toxic clickbait factory of Osney Mead (due to be regenerated). The penultimate paragraph is why. The hospitals are well away from traffic filters. Needless to say, the lazy hack didn’t bother checking his facts before fabricating disinformation.

There's a long-held assumption that celebrities only travel by private chauffeur. David Byrne's ride to Met Gala, Timothée Chalamet's Lime biking and now Cate Blanchett's Brompton getaway show this to be increasingly untrue. We shouldn't be so surprised when people use the best tool for the job.
