Listening to a report about Google chopping down a quarter of a million trees in Finland to build a data centre while washing out yoghurt pots for the recycling

I worked in bookselling when this came out and although I never read it I read a lot about it. The words "otherwise central zone" are written into my brain, sadly. They remind me of nothing so much as murderous psychopath Nice Pete getting writing advice from Téodor in Achewood.

It is, today, not the 13th anniversary of the publication of Steven Morrissey’s autobiography (it had been out for ten days) but something much better: the 13th anniversary of the Sunday Times publishing A. A. Gill’s merciless mauling of it—a review which went on to win Hatchet Job of the Year

Most months I get to play a few vinyl records at a local brewery tap and in August I played Ah Leah!, a song I've loved for 20 years. It wasn't a hit here in the UK but people were like "what is this?" Do You Compute? and The Rapper are also extremely great. RIP to a real one.

Jail time for people who stand on the left on tube escalators. Public stoning for people who walk at you looking at their phone. Stay tuned for more mad, unenforceable policy ideas aimed at minor daily irritations.

As well as sending Martin Duffy to an early grave, Bobby Gillespie was dead wrong about Josephine (La Version Française) by Chris Rea. It absolutely rips.

I didn't buy the tote bag as I'm a Johnny come lately who's only been listening to Arab Strap for 29 fucking years. I don't know the last three albums as well as the first three and I probably never will but the sounds and the shapes are familiar. And they played New Birds, which made me cry a bit.

Seeing them reminds me of swapping tapes of B-sides ("This is Falkirk, the band's hometown...") and Mary Ann Hobbs sessions with my friends Christian and Rob from the Kenickie mailing list. And of my school friend Alex screaming 'Deeper' at Dingwalls in October 1997 (they didn't play it though).

We missed the last train home after that show. We headed to Victoria in hopes of getting a coach. There wasn't one - but for reasons that remain opaque to me they put us in a black cab, which National Express paid for. Super!

You know, the thing is, I had drafted this piece a month ago, and then never published it, because I thought maybe it was too mean.

Your regular reminder: If the Russians stop fighting, the war ends. If the Ukrainians stop fighting, their land will be occupied, their leaders will be killed, their history and language will be erased, their children will be kidnapped to serve Russia.

It's nonsense to suggest that people who support Brexit and Reform are motivated by racism. And if you don't believe me, check out this perfectly reasonable tweet by prominent Reform member and former mayoral candidate, Arron Banks.

Speaking of Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou - they're the greatest. I saw them for the 20th time last night, at the Betsey Trotwood. New album on Loose next year.

Usually if I'm in this neck of the woods I'm working but tonight it's Rough Trade East to see Dexys Midnight Runners. I've seen several of my faves on this stage: The Darkness, Trevor Moss and Hannah-Lou, a disappointingly tossed off Divine Comedy and indeed Dexys themselves.

Mum, mum! He's been! The Discogs man has been! Some things that came in the post today for #weekendsingles Ah! Leah! by Donnie Iris, Der Kommissar by After The Fire, Hot Child in the City by Nick Gilder and I Think We're Alone Now by The Rubinoos

One of the more obscure facts I remember about Dolly Parton is this: just like Star Trek would not exist without Lucille Ball, Buffy would not exist without Dolly Parton. She was a silent producer of the movie and show. That's why Buffy Summers has the same birthday as Dolly: January 19.

Radio Caroline playing tribute to Frank Beard by playing something off of Eliminator which I'm pretty sure does not feature him at all. It's all programmed / a drum machine. Frank wasn't needed and spent the majority of the sessions at the golf course.
